Autism Diagnoses Surge by 30 Percent in Kids, CDC Reports

e latest look at autism in the U.S. shows a startling 30 percent jump among 8-year-olds diagnosed with the disorder in a two-year period, to one in every 68 children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which did the survey, says the numbers almost certainly reflect more awareness and diagnosis of kids who would have been missed in years past. The new estimate for 2010 was a jump from one in 88 children in 2008, the last year for which numbers had been available.

“The number of children diagnosed with autism continues to rise,” the agency’s Dr. Coleen Boyle told reporters.

But the CDC noted that the numbers vary greatly from state to state, and it did not use a nationally representative sample, but a look at groups of children in 11 states.

“The number of children identified with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) ranged from 1 in 175 children in Alabama to 1 in 45 children in New Jersey,” CDC says in its report, based on a survey taken in 2010. The numbers from 2008 were first reported in 2012.

This would work out to about 1.2 million children under 18, Boyle says.

Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a child neurologist at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, who was not involved in the study, said he believed the numbers, but thought they reflected a rise in diagnosis, not "the true prevalence of autism."

“I'm not convinced that the true numbers of autism are rising, rising, rising every time we survey them,” Wiznitzer told NBC News in an interview.

“Over time, more children are being identified,” agreed Dr. Lisa Shulman, a specialist in autism at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University in New York.

Sorry to hear about that. A lot of people push the “gluten free/casein free diet” as a treatment but there is no evidence it has any effect (there is only evidence that is has NO effect).

You should check out the Association for Science in Autism Treatment (http://www.asatonline.org).

How about the fact that is no evidence diets have an effect (there is evidence the gluten-free, casein-free diets have NO effect).

See the Association for Science in Autism Treatment (http://www.asatonline.org) for great summaries of the data on autism treatment.

Autism — the new ADD.

So sick of this. There are people who truly are autistic, and this kind of junk just diminishes the proper attention they should have.

“tell me why you think it’s bunk.”

No one can say specifically what food it is or combination
of foods that cause autism. And the term “junk food” is
just someones opinion. People were eating the same food
before this autism epidemic. I buy this “autism caused by
diet” about as much as I buy veganism. Bunk.
Bunkety bunk bunk.

Most likely its the mandatory immunization shots.

Except that the “vaccine cause” was based on made-up data. See the retraction here : http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(97)11096-0/abstract

You might want to check out the Association for Science in Autism Treatment (http://www.asatonline.org) for good summaries of the data on autism treatment.

I understand your pain, but you could get your point across without using such vulgar language. There are ladies present, you know.

I can assure you that our child was noticed to have a problem, long before school came into play (at 1). Also, with us ... money or politics or “agenda” had nothing to do with recognizing that a problem existed.

They’re not all like that. And actually most of them are not like that.

Our little boy is great, and he has a wonderful disposition, but I’ll assure you that even being a strong supporter of the Bill of Rights, including the 2nd Amendment, I would not put a firearm in his hands, with the condition he has now, because I know he would eventually harm himself accidentally, if not others.

One should realize that in these cases - it’s not “driven” from the standpoint of politics, or money or agenda. Talk to these parents and you’ll find out it’s “driven” from the standpoint of definite problem noticed - in terms of developmental delays in several areas. Things are not going right.

Now, I’ve been on this board long enough to know that many think that things only “proceed” from money, politics, or agenda - but with many people in life — many times these don’t play a part in being a “driver of circumstances” — especially in a situation like this.

Ours has a very sweet character and disposition. I sometimes wonder if that goes with this kind of condition.

Many here just think everything is political ...but sometimes it just isn’t.

So very true ... and there is such a thing as an objective reality that exists outside of money, politics and "agenda". But apparently some Freepers have "lived" on here so long, that they've forgotten that.

If you’re offended, sorry

Actually, I'm not offended. I simply face the reality, as is proven here, that Freepers can be as big an IDIOT as liberals. IDIOCY isn't limited to the left of the political spectrum ... :-) ...

Sorry if my vulgar language offended you. I am postictal and should have never got involved in this today. I may not be a lady according to you but I am a nana that has a soft spot for disabled people, especially children.

Unmanaged access without design or purpose may be as you say, but there are good examples of devices like iPads, used with certain and specific “apps” designed for kids on the spectrum - do produce good results.

One of the things that we’re considering is an app that gives a close-up and visual picture (video) of words, so that our child can study it over and over, for word formation. I’ve noticed that he studies the lips very closely with certain words. There have been good results from this kind of app.
