In a stunning ruling that has the potential to revolutionize college athletics, a federal agency said Wednesday that football players at Northwestern University can create the nation's first college athlete's union.
The decision by a regional director of the National Labor Relations Board means it agrees football players at the Big Ten school qualify as employees under federal law and therefore can legally unionize.

And there goes college football.
That will leave a mark. Now watch high schools get even more sports-centric. We already have one around here. A certain school that has a 3-1 ratio of boys over girls and if you are on the baseball team (they have 3) you can do no wrong.
The Girl’s Vollyball players are employees too. They can Unionize and get payed. They just can’t play Vollyball in the NCAA.
What do we know about the self-appointed union head, Ramogi Huma? Who appointed him god?
Obama appointee? Yeah, I’m stuned.
I can safely say this will be one organizing election the unions will win.
Hey, Johnny Football, slow down, your makin’ the rest of us look bad.
Well, one would be hard put to argue that they are all diligent students with a priority of earning a degree. Looks to me like some people use the university as a step to going pro, and some universities want them to do just that, because it is more fun and profitable to have a winning team, especially when you don’t have to make a serious attempt to educate the players.
I am torn about college athletics. You kind of need a football game, or there is no reason for a half-time show (my favorite part). But the whole thing is way far away from the goal of educating students, and a real student who also likes football is never going to get a chance to play for his school.
Gee, which socialist asshat to side with, the NCAA or the NLRB.
Might be a good popcorn moment.
Right-to-work clauses, seniority, job posting, stewards, etc. coming to a team near you.
Who pays the union dues?
(1) They don’t have to PLAY.
College football will be fine, it’s NCAA that’s doomed.
Great. A group of college kids with the ability to take a labor action on game day and ruin 109k people’s day.
What could possible go wrong?
Since they are now employees, their scholarships must be considered as taxable income.
What about college badminton? There be sumpin’ racis ‘bout this.
I do not think that this matters a whole lot. In my opinion the "high water" mark for football took place last year.
Do not know whether the decline will be fast or slow.
