I have 17 million reasons for wanting to increase the minimum wage. Yes, 17 millionthe number of children whose lives would be a little more secure if their moms and dads earned at least $10.10 an hour.
When I was in junior high, my daddy had a heart attack. He was home for a while, the medical bills piled up, and we lost our family station wagon.
So my mother did what she had to do: She went to work answering the phones at Sears. The job paid only minimum wage, but it was enough to make sure we could keep our home.
No one should work full time and live in poverty. --snip--
When I think about the minimum wage, I think about my mom and what she did for us. And then I think about the 17 million kids whose moms or dads could do more for their families, if they just had a fighting chance. /barf

What does “livable wage” mean?
I hear rats and their cohorts say it a lot. “Livable” for whom? A married college grad with 4 kids ? A never-married high school dropout with 3 kids? A teen working the drivethrough who lives with their parents? A single legislator with a gambling habit? All these people will likely have different opinion for what defines “liveable”.
San Francisco has a minimum wage of $10/hr(highest of any city in the nation). Business owners there also must pay another $1.23 to $1.85 an hour per employee for health-care coverage if they don’t offer health insurance. San Francisco is also the only city in the state that charges a payroll tax of 1.5 percent; it also mandates nine paid sick days annually per employee. And yet they have more panhandlers and homeless than anywhere I’ve recently visited in the US and has the highest rental rates in the country if you exclude Manhatten.
We don’t want to turn our country into Eurofrisco Nice place to visit, couldn’t ever afford to live there.
I agree with you because I believe in trading value for value. A Society thrives on Earned Success and personal responsibility.
OTOH, Those who demand resources believe they can use force to receive their ‘rights’* (or basic needs of food, shelter, health care, education, job or just money) which leads to their freedom from want.
*BTW, A Right is the permission to pursue not a claim to another’s property or talents.
... now demonstrates that she neither has any qualms about disguising the higher teen and minority unemployment and lower GDP (meaning lower taxes collected) that inevitably follows higher min wages.
.
Well, we have at least one potential presidential candidate who has been very explicit about that concept.
Many of you are well enough off that [President Bush's] tax cuts may have helped you. Were saying that for America to get back on track, were probably going to cut that short and not give it to you. Were going to have to take things away from you on behalf of the common good. (Hillary grandstanding at a fund raising speech in San Francisco; SFGate.com 6/28/2004.)
"God bless the America we are trying to create."
We just cant trust the American people to make those types of choices
. Government has to make those choices for people (From the book Ive Always Been A Yankee Fan by Thomas D. Kuiper, p 20 Hillary to Rep. Dennis Hastert in 1993 discussing her expensive, disastrous taxpayer-funded health care plan)
Most aryan looking Indian I’ve ever seen ( and I’m not talking about punjabis)
Sort of like the 46 million reasons the gubmint used to push Obamacare down our throats...
I'm guessing you want a free pony. I hate to have to tell you this but you and I are not the reciepents of free ponies but we are providers of free ponies for others.
Another greedy, rich woman who refuses to pay the workers a living wage. No one can live on $10 an hour. The minimum wage should be at least $50 an hour.
If ten million illegal aliens here to work were sent home, 10 million Americans would have jobs without raising the minimum wage.
Send the children home with the parents, and our population growth will halt. Schools will no longer be crowded, and test scores won’t be pulled down by children whose parents didn’t finish middle school before coming here.
I know, right?
Yup. You'd think she'd understand wage-push inflation. Push up minimum wage... push up the whole wage structure, but especially union wages keyed to minimum, and mandated in government projects (because they're so fair). The effect, with a lag, is inflation, and no one is better off than before.
With respect I think we are all chasing our tails debating the merits and/or practicality of the minimum-wage and equal-pay-for-women. These proposals are being brought up only so that Republicans can reject them and then have this used against them in midterm campaign ads.
You can be sure if there was any chance of congressional Republicans agreeing to any of this stuff the proposals would immediately be made more radical just to cause the intended Republican opposition.
No one in the Democrat party gives a rat’s ass whether a higher minimum wage would help 17 million children, because they know it will never pass. It might help a few dozen Democrat hacks keep their jobs this fall if we’re not careful.
Then they could inform her that the tiny % of people who actually earn the minimum wage are mostly teenagers &/or those just starting out in the workforce.
And, you're right. She's using the tried & true liberal tactic of "the children" to advance her cause.
did her father have a heart attack in a teepee?
freakin moron
why ANYONE would let morons like this speak with any semblance of authority on the subject of economics is beyond me
Stingy B****! She wants poor working people to make only TWO THIRDS as much as Micky-D’s burger flippers (want to) make per hour? /sarc
SHAME ON FAUXCAHONTAS! (NOT sarcasm.)
How expensive can a teepee be? “Station wagon?” I would think they’d use a travois, right?
Good to see ya.
You have been popular today.
Elizabeth Warren is a dingbat!
Dingbats are incapable of rational thinking!
The Massholes who elected her to the US Senate are dingbats!
Massholes are incapable of rational thinking!
And therein lies the problem: the definition of “poor” has been expanded to absurd levels. Some 87% of the world’s population meeds the legal US definition of “poor” (purchasing power parity corrections included).
The “war on poverty” has been won. The new problem is that “functional poverty” (as your friend lived in) has for most practical purposes been outlawed in most jurisdictions. Legislators have decided that independent living reasonably expected to continue indefinitely in decent health is far from sufficient, and that instead one have an array of what some 87% of the world would consider luxuries.
