Obama Says Russia Is 'Regional Power,' Not America's Top Geopolitical Foe
ABC News By Jonathan Karl 3 hours ago
THE HAGUE, Netherlands - With Moscow showing no signs of backing down from the standoff over Ukraine, President Obama today took a swing at Russian President Putin's status on the global stage - describing Russia as simply a "regional power."
"America's got a whole lot of challenges. Russia is a regional power that is threatening some of its immediate neighbors - not out of strength, but out of weakness," Obama said at a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
Asked by ABC News if he now agrees with former political rival Mitt Romney's assertion that Russia is America's top geopolitical foe, Obama pushed back, saying: "Russia's actions are a problem. They don't pose the number one national security to the United States. I continue to be much more concerned when it comes to our security with the prospect of nuclear weapon going off in Manhattan."
"Ukraine has been a country in which Russia had enormous influence for decades - since the breakup of the Soviet Union. And you know, we have considerable influence on our neighbors. We generally don't need to invade them in order to have a strong cooperative relationship with them. The fact that Russia felt compelled to go in militarily and lay bare these violations of international law indicates less influence, not more," he added.
With roughly 30,000 Russian troops amassed on the border with Ukraine, Obama said the U.S. is "concerned about further encroachment by Russia into Ukraine."
"We oppose what appears to be an effort of intimidation, but Russia has a right, legally, to have its troops on its own soil. I don't think it's a done deal.

Obama is so juvenile. I can’t wait to see him leave
Meanwhile in 2013 America shipped 122 billion of goods to China.
China meanwhile, shipped 420 billion of goods to America.
That deficit is huge, and ever growing...
Juvenile is annoying with dealing with a bad boss at work.
For a world leader it’s the scariest possible scenerio.
Obama is a master of meaningless nonsense. The only foe he views as serious and in need of destroying are the 50 or so percent of Americans who don’t agree with his leftist politics.
Regional (as in ‘provincial’) experts in charge of the U.S. foreign policy.
...And the top foe is the United States.
Even Neville Chamberlain wasn’t that naive. At least he was willing to go to war over Poland. Obama? Not so much. Before this is over, Putin will annex Kazakstan, making Russia the largest holder of oil reserves in the world.
You got that right.
There is no such thing as a trade deficit.
There is a MASSIVE trade deficit, and we are giving China our wealth, technology and power.
Bring back American manufacturing.
Just one generation ago, we were on top of the entire globe.
In just one generation, we have squandered that, and given away what was the envy of the entire globe - to a massive communist country.
Bring back American manufacturing.
Now.
This man is a fool.
America’s top foe ia Obama his own se’f.
“Bring back American manufacturing.
Now.”
You can’t even START to bring back American Manufacturing, until you begin to address the reasons that it was destroyed in the first place.
And that will NEVER happen in a political environment like this.
I repeat. There is no such thing as a trade deficit. It’s a null term without meaning used by economic illiterates as of it were a bogeyman.
We give them money. They give us goods. The books balance.
The fact that we buy more goods from them than they do from us is meaningless. They buy more of our debt than we do of theirs.
Books always balance. Period.
To Dear Leader: I guess the presence of Russian armed forces in Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Syria, and other places I have not mentioned does not count for a “regional power”.
Just wait till Putin puts men and rockets in Cuba. Bases subs in Havana and starts to move into A broken and divided Europe. Remember the prophecy of the Third Rome? (If you don’t recall—its Moscow). Rather than give Mitt Romney a nod that he might have been right—he would offend a growing super power! We are so screwed!
I’m sorry but we need to make things.
Right now.
We need to bring back American manufacturing.
We are now more than 17 trillion dollars in debt. Our military is about to start experiencing defunding, as our spending continues to grow.
China is reversing that, and growing. China runs a MASSIVE trade surplus against America.
Go into any store. In any town, or city, in all of America.
Most of the stuff has been imported from China.
China is building up.
We are paying for that.
We are paying the country, which is building up to replace us.
You are right. Unfortunately you have folks even here with their heads so firmly implanted, they can only see daylight a couple of times per year.
Don’t tell me it can’t be done, bringing manufacturing and jobs back to the U. S. Just get it done.
All it takes for a person with even a little intelligence, is to take a look at what manufacturing has facilitated for China.
With mechanization, today’s labor costs in the United States could be only a small percentage of the finished product cost.
Instead, our people look for reasons why selling out the United States and it’s citizens is reasoned.
Well, it’s not.
Don’t expect to see folks be honest with you, when they can’t even be honest with themselves.
