Even preschoolers are getting suspended from U.S. public schoolsand they're disproportionately Black, a trend that continues up through the later grades.
Data released March 21 by the Education Department's civil rights arm finds that Black children represent about 18 percent of children enrolled in preschool programs in schools, but almost half of the students were suspended more than once. Six percent of the nation's districts with preschools reported suspending at least one preschool child.
Advocates have long said that get-tough suspension and arrest policies in schools have contributed to a "school-to-prison" pipeline that snags minority students, but much of the emphasis has been on middle school and high school policies. This data shows the disparities starting in the youngest of children.
Earlier this year, the Obama administration issued guidance encouraging schools to abandon what it described as overly zealous discipline policies that send students to court instead of the principal's office. But, even before the announcement, school districts have been adjusting policies that disproportionately affect minority students.
Overall, the data shows that Black students of all ages are suspended and expelled at a rate that's three times higher than that of White children. Even as boys receive more than two-thirds of suspensions, Black girls are suspended at higher rates than girls of any other race or most boys.
The data doesn't explain why the disparities exist or why the students were suspended. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and Attorney General Eric Holder were scheduled to appear at J.O. Wilson Elementary School on March 21 in Washington to discuss the data.
Nationally, one million children were served in public preschool programs, with about 60 percent of districts offering preschool during the 2011-2012 school year, according to the data. The data shows nearly 5,000 preschoolers suspended once. At least 2,500 were suspended more than once.
Daniel Losen, director of the Center for Civil Rights Remedies for the Civil Rights Project at UCLA, said the findings are disturbing because the suspended preschoolers aren't likely presenting a danger, such as teenager bringing a gun to school.
"Almost none of these kids are kids that wouldn't be better off with some support from educators," Losen said. "Just kicking them out of school is denying them access to educational opportunity at such a young age. Then, as they come in for kindergarten, they are just that much less prepared."
Losen said it's appropriate to discipline a 4-year-old, but a more appropriate response might be moving them to a different educational setting with additional services.
"Most preschool kids want to be in school," Losen said. "Kids just don't understand why they can't go to school."
Judith Browne Dianis, co-director of the Advancement Project, a think tank that specializes in social issues affecting minority communities, has been advocating against the overly zealous use of suspensions against African American students. Unfortunately, she said it didn't surprise her to hear that even younger black students were being kicked out of school at a high rate.
"I think most people would be shocked that those numbers would be true in preschool, because we think of 4- and 5-years-olds as being innocent," she said. "But we do know that schools are using zero tolerance policies for our youngest also, that while we think our children need a head start, schools are kicking them out instead."
And there's the rub. The idiot can't fathom that kids (actually, their families) might NOT value education and might NOT care about school. And, they act accordingly.
It's a hard concept for me to grasp as well....that an entire culture has set such low expectations for itself, then has that soft racism reinforced by liberalism in its entirety.
Well since the government schools are totally run by RATs; logic demands the RATs are deliberatly descriminating against them, denying them an education, forcing them into the prison system, and perpetuating the RAT legacy of RAT enslavement of colored people.
Patrons and employees at my local W-M are predominately white (Very close to 100%). It's the same in the town where I live.
I know, I know, all this means is, that I'm racist.
“The data doesn’t explain why the disparities exist “
Wrong. No one dares say that the kids misbehave more than their lighter-skinned counterparts.
Don't they have security-cam footage and facial recognition software?
They wouldn't happen to be domestic black-savages...would they?
You could walk me into any Walmart after closing time, and not knowing anything about the location,
I could tell you the primary demographic that works at and frequents the store
by the neatness and completeness of the stocked shelves.
It’s so funny - so many of the people that say this kind of thing are Jews, and if you ask them, they usually have no problem saying (at least to themselves) that the Jewish culture values education in a way few others do.
As a former Jewish supervisor of mine said, “”So she said to me, my brother is a lawyer and I’m going to call him on you!” Big Deal! I’m Jewish, and everyone I know has a brother who’s a lawyer and one who’s a doctor! And I have TWO!”
I thought it was pretty funny at the time.
But the sad things about libs is they won’t believe even the evidence in front of their faces. I once saw a bunch of black kids making fun of another because he “studied like a white boy”. I mentioned this to a liberal and he absolutely refused to believe it. They just can’t accept it, that just like there are cultures that value school, there are others that view it negatively.
"You can't go to school because you keep doing bad things. Stop doing bad things, and you can go to school."
There.
Bloomberg had a pretty aggressive, but carefully Constitutional, program to minimize how many misbehaving youths were packing in their local neighborhoods (where by far most of the crime is committed).
Their new all-but-admitted-to-be-communist mayor, Bill De Blasio ran against that program to a landslide win. Fortunately he stumbled into making his one decent appointment so far the new and previous police commissioner, Ray Kelly.
Otherwise, the City, now the safest in the nation, would have already fallen into a downward spiral of increasing crime.
Who can tell, no one seems to be putting out physical descriptions ...
Then again, as pointed out earlier, the terms “teen” “youth” “random” and “mob” in the context of urban violence is now a clear indicator of what’s really involved.
A good question is what behavior results in suspension of a preschooler?
I suspect the answer can be found in either a complete lack of home discipline, coupled with neglect; or in chemically induced brain damage; or a combination of both.
Ignoring race entirely, I suspect there is a spectrum of misbehavior, and only “likely to result in physical harm to others” can result in suspension. All other behavior problems can be dealt with by a teacher, but if a student is persistent in trying to hurt other students, the other students need to be protected from them.
Many will call this racism, but in fact, the problem lies in their family life - or the lack of family life.
72% of new born black children are born to single mothers, per recent survey. And that is both tragic and scary.
No... couldn’t be the culture they are raised in /sarc

That’s not racist, that’s worse!
It’s pointing out the results of detrimental, feel good, liberal policy.
Maybe Holder will ask the DC school principal why she suspends more blacks than others. The leadership of the DC schools is black. The majority of teachers is black. The majority of students is black.
They are clearly all racists!
The article states that 1,000,000 children are in pre-school and 5,000 were suspended. One half of one percent. I suspect that in pretty much any population at least one-half of one percent of the members of that population are sufficiently disruptive that removal from the group is necessary to preserve the benefits of the group for the other 99.5%. If black preschoolers are suspended at twice the rate of their representation in the population, we are talking about 500 extra suspensions nationwide. These are hardly numbers that shock the conscience and cannot be statistically significant.
They can talk about it all they want, but states can’t afford to support 2 school systems.
That’s a Win-Win for the likes of Jackson and Sharpton.
They have this excuse that they need this unaffordable program or policy in order to correct an observable failure of culture or policy.
DOG-WHISTLE!....DOG-WHISTLE!
The kid in your linked video is clearly evil and most likely was BORN evil and with a low IQ. There will be no help for him and the community will be safer the sooner this vile creature is caught in some criminal activity and imprisoned.
