Fred Phelps, a former street preacher who led a family ministry that raged against what he perceived as a morally bankrupt society, died Thursday. His legacy of picketing funerals of military veterans and disaster victims, promoting coarse language to condemn conduct he viewed as amoral, and waging legal battles that protected his actions under the First Amendment, earned him an international reputation of a mans whose absolute conviction was never swayed in the face of widespread contempt.
The level of his vitriol, the savageness of his comments, were just unmatched anywhere. His rhetoric was such he united people both on the far left to the far right in opposition to him and his message, says Mark Potok, a senior fellow at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala.
The organization, which tracks hate groups across the US, dubbed the Westboro Baptist Church, which Phelps founded in 1955, arguably the most obnoxious and rabid hate group in America.

Barry also started out as an ACLU Lawyer, and then got his license as a Christian minister, even though I'm pretty sure he's Jewish.
I only know one thing for sure....they are EVIL, VILE people who are ANTI-CHRISTIAN as can be.
It won’t surprise me if some group decided to stage a public, unauthorized memorial service for Fred Phelps. The image of Fred Phelps will either be hung in effigy or beaten as a painted pinata. A memorial service would be held for the expressed purpose of getting together and talking about the negative impact his ‘church’ has had on others, year after year, frivolous lawsuit after frivolous lawsuit. Someone needs to make a documentary about this groups’ toxic effect on it’s community.
isn’t Fred Phelps Sr. the one who died? Jr is the one in the photo.
You are correct. The old man was a big time Democrat too.
You do realize that they protested at funerals of gay men who died of AIDS, long before they protested at military funerals? That was how he started becoming famous/infamous.
Were they afraid it would be picketed or afraid it wouldn’t be?
They're Democrats; what do you expect?
Not true,. Mr. Potok. You and the people at SPLC (a well-known hate group, like Westboro) can easily match it. You do so many times each and every day.
I was surprised to learn that this disgusting family is highly educated, owns a successful law practice firm. Clients would hire them because of their success record.
True -- the Democrat Party, the southern Poverty Law Center, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, the KKK, Al Qaeda, Al Jazeera, the CPUSA, and other such front groups and conscious or unconscious agents.
Nobodys death should be celebrated, not even a person as vile as Fred Phelps. That which is Life and gives life, whatever you name choose to use, chose to give the world Fred Phelps, for some reason, one which I admit I dont understand and Im sure most people dont.
Nevertheless, he was a human being with a family and they are (mostly) grieving. As hateful a lot as the Westboro group is, rejoicing at anyones death is unseemly and inhuman.
Did his family/cult stop protesting at the funerals of dead soldiers after a Democrat was elected President again?
Did his family/cult ever protest a single gay pride parade or gay wedding ceremony?
Shooting massacre protests and protests against soldiers who fought in Iraq. Typical Democrat.
He was a political mover and shaker before his antics made him an uncomfortable figure to be seen with. same as Obama's 20 year pastor, Jeremiah Wright.
He ran for office as a Democrat several times.
Maybe, but I admit to doing a little happy dance right in the baggage claim of BWI airport the day John Murtha died.
I'd do it again too. Call me inhuman.
Thanks for the mention. I was unaware of that.
I don’t know but I suspect it’s a two part organization that operates in tandem with his “estranged” son’s organization across the road... which is a pro-LGBT group that also promotes atheisim.
Dad’s group can go out and put on a hate show that gets lots of national coverage, while the son’s group can coordinate appeals to the LGBT community for money to fight the hate based on the news reports.
It’s like running a security company and a shoplifting ring at the same time- they both feed each other.
Son says he was abused by his Dad, which may or may not be true. Wouldn’t doubt it... but he still set up his place across the road. You’d think he’d want to be as far from his as possible.
