British school bans red ink for teachers

Teachers at a British school are no longer allowed to use their dreaded red pens to mark students' work.

Under a new grading policy at Mounts Bay Academy in Cornwall, teachers must mark and write feedback in green, while students must reply in purple.

"Students make more progress if it is a dialogue and the new system is designed to help that," Headteacher Sara Davey told the Cornishman newspaper.

"A lot of primary schools are already using a similar system amazingly well and I think it was felt that red ink was a very negative colour."

The Campaign for Real Education, which says it fights for "higher standards and more parental choice in state education," has taken a stand against the policy.

"The problem with using a colour like green or blue is that it's not clear," chair Chris McGovern said.

"A lot of schools seem to have a culture where they don't like criticizing children but actually (red ink) helps them."

I wonder if accountants and bookkeepers will be able to use red ink. Showing losses can he hard on the self esteem.

I’m surprised by this. Based on their budgets, Libs love red ink

Won’t green ink soon develop the same negative connotation red ink has now? And what about the differently color sighted (don’t you dare call them color blind) who won’t be able to tell the difference and won’t get any help from their seeing eye dogs about whether the big X is a critical red or nice helpful green?

I guess red ruins self esteem, I remember red marks on my school work; it was embarrassing, not to mention the horror facing me when I took my papers home, motivated me to do better.

This is silly PC nonsense. A color is just a color; its the tone of the comments that matter.

I once worked in a job involving lots of writing. Several senior people were involoved in the editing and fact checking process but the green pen was reserved exclusively for comments/critique from the office boss. Green was the dreaded color that nobody wanted to see. lol

What liberals, being the dumbest people on the planet ever, fail to realize is that when there is no reward for success and no consequences for failure then all this “no red ink” idiocy will never motivate someone to try. Liberals keep trying to find what motivates people but they don’t want success or consequences to be included.

Does it really matter what color the ink is? Because at the end of the day, an F is still a freakin F.

I had a high school English teacher who “ loved to see papers bleed.” Through some miracle, none of us were scarred for life.

Are they even allowed to hand out F’s anymore?

At risk of sounding like a broken record...

As our government continues to embrace the suck emanating from those we fought for independence, this is just another example of why conservatives should take a more serious look at this

Nothing new.

The same arguments — red or green — were going on 40 years ago.

Even giving grades continues to come under fire.

All of the red ink in the UK is reserved for official use by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Using colors to grade with is racist.

I have always used green ink to grade with. I have a rule in my classes, the students can use any color they want to write with as long as it is dark enough for my old eyes to read, and green is my color only. They love this rule because they like to use lavender, turquoise, dark pink, orange or a number of colors. I always hated red ink on my papers when I was in school. It had a stigma. My rule is a way of creating a little good will with my students.

How long until purple and green ink is considered too harsh a color for these precious delicate flowers? When will the first imam issue a fatwa declaring purple is offensive to islam? I remember watching a police interrogation on youtube where police were grilling a guy while chargin him with a serious crime. His crime? He had a box cutter in his pocket at a shopping mall. He installs carpet.

It’s no wonder how massive immigration, nationalized health care, and extremely generous welfare has destroyed the once mightiest Brittish empire in a short 60 years.
