Polls: Americans Repeatedly Say "No!" to U.S. Intervention in Ukraine

In polls taken over the past few weeks by a number of opinion survey and news organizations, the American people have sent a remarkably unified message to President Obama and the U.S. Congress: “Stay out of Ukraine!”
Despite being peppered with a constant onslaught of dramatic news video footage from Kiev and the Crimea, as well as a visit to the Obama White House by Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, and the usual stable of policy “experts” from the Brookings Institution and the Council on Foreign Relations advocating more “robust” U.S. intervention, Americans across the political spectrum remain opposed to still another foreign venture.
A Pew Research Center poll reported on March 11 that in a national survey of over 1,000 adults, Americans, by a nearly two-to-one margin (56 percent vs. 29 percent), say it is more important for the United States to “not get too involved” in the situation with Russia and Ukraine than to “take a firm stand against Russian actions.” The breakdown along party lines, for those expressing opposition to greater involvement was Republicans, 50 percent; Democrats, 55 percent; Independents, 62 percent.

I’ve read the article and perused the posts and replies. All I can say is wonderful wonderful wonderful. We’re all basically on the same page.

Ukraine Sets Deadline for Militias to Surrender Illegal Guns
In an effort to stabilize Ukraine and extend its authority, the interim government has set a deadline of Friday for turning in the illegal firearms that are now carried openly by so-called self-defense groups in Independence Square, the politically important plaza in the center of the capital.
The order was seconded on Thursday by the French ambassador to Ukraine, Alain Rémy, who said the disarmament of the militias that helped overthrow the former government is a central requirement for the European Union to begin disbursing financial aid, along with the government fighting corruption.

Public opinion never stops a Democrat President who wants HIS victory.
It didn’t stop Woodrow Wilson who got the US into WWI against the peoples’ wishes.
It didn’t stop FDR who got the US into WWII against the peoples’ wishes.
It didn’t stop Truman from getting the US into Korea.
It didn’t stop LBJ from concocting the Tonkin Gulf incident to further enmesh the US in Vietnam.
It won’t stop Obama from getting HIS chance at a VICTORY. With his poll numbers, he’d probably leap at any chance to grab at success from the jaws of defeat.
We kept Russkie expansionism in check for half a century without ever directly engaging them in combat, and it served the best interests of this country helping to keep us prosperous, innovative, and strong in the process. With visionary and resolute leadership, we could do it again. At the current time, however, that is the one thing we lack in spades.
Good. The U.S. citizenry does have some sense every once in awhile.
I guess we just completely ignore that Ukraine sent combat troops to Iraq and Afghanistan for 5 years when we needed friends, and disarmed based on our promises. See my tag.
False analogy.
Ukraine is not Russian. Language and customs are as distinct as Russia and Poland. In fact, Ukraine shares as much history with Poland as they do with Russia.
Ukraine was once ‘united’ to Poland and also to Russia in the sense of administrative control. But Ukraine declared independence from both long ago.
Your analogy is false because there are no ‘separatists’ in Ukraine. There are Russian groups inside the Crimea that are descended from Russians moved to Crimea under Soviet orders to maintain control of a warm water naval port.
A more apt analogy would be the USA arming separatists in Panama to take back the Canal Zone. But that’s not happening.
I know well about the distinctions because over the past 15 years I have had many Ukrainian immigrants working for me. Their language and history, including religious traditions are different from Russia’s. There are similarities but they are as different as Basque and Spaniards except that Ukraine has for much of its history been an independent nation with its own capital.
The reason that most Americans oppose counteraction or pushback to Putin is because they are ignorant of history. The very same attitudes existed when Germany took over the Sudentenland and then went on to annex all of Czechoslovakia. Everywhere there were German groups abroad, Germany invaded for purposes of protecting German groups abroad.
Putin is a thug who is following in Germany’s footsteps. He has designs to annex all of Ukraine. He has warned Estonia the same could be coming to them. He can and likely will warn Latvia of the same and may try again with Georgia. The Poles and Lithuanians are not far behind.
Putin must be pushed back on just as Bush pushed back on him on Georgia. But this will not happen under Obama.
Mark it here that in 5 years Americans will be grumbling about why nothing was done under Obama to pushback against Putin. And Obama will be branded as the worst president ever in foreign affairs,

Did you miss the part where I wrote the small arms were for the men Ukraine was calling up for the army? Criminals have always had access to guns in Ukraine. For the regular citizen it’s extremely difficult to own a gun legally with the possible exception of a shotgun.
Ukraine is an example of what our country would become if firearms were outlawed if certain repressive political groups had their way. Only criminals would have firearms.
To recap, the firearms requested by Ukraine were for the army. What’s the problem with that?
The firearms requested by Ukraine were for the men being called up for induction into the army. You are correct about the contest being lopsided. Russia holds all the cards with a better equipped and trained army. Do you prefer Ukrainian soldiers go to their deaths ill equipped? Do you think Russia will not attack because it wouldn’t be fair?
Do you think Russia will give up its plan to stage long range bombers in South America if we do not provide small arms for Ukraine’s new soldiers? Russia is playing us as a country and apparently you also. They’ve always had people willing to do their bidding in high office here.
Apparently I’m getting forgetful in my old age. Where did I suggest putting our military forces in Ukraine? FWIW, that would not be wanted by Ukraine. The last thing they want is foreign military forces operating on their soil including ours. That was not their request.
How are American butts on the line if we give Ukraine small arms such as rifles? Those could be flown into Poland, a NATO member, and transferred at the border into Ukrainian hands. Easy, peasy.

No, I do not want our troops fighting a foreign war with the clown in charge. He gets them killed. If you want to stop aggression, you will have to wait until 2017 and hope we get better than the clown we have now. Obama likes to ignite regions to rise up (Think V Nuland), install a puppet of the regimes choosing, and drive on down the road leaving a mess that invites aggression by stronger people.
See, now the EU, who is supposed to be Ukraines “good choice” is stripping their weapons from them in order to get help from EU. What a deal, scurrilous just like that agreement Clinton signed.

I don’t know where you’re getting the idea that the EU is stripping weapons from Ukraine. This is critical to the world with regard to stymieing Russian aggression. Ukraine is trying to remove the weapons from the criminal element within its borders. Some believe the few incidents of sniping were instigated by Russia since those rifles are normally prohibited from private ownership. Ukraine has the kind of gun control some would like imposed here.
Even getting permission to buy a .22 in Ukraine is extremely difficult and expensive.

I do know one thing. Criminals do not voluntarily turn in their weapons. Good guys don’t either if a tyrant is on their border. They would laugh at anyone who asked them to trade personal safety for “some help”.
That’s exactly right. Same here. The disposed president starved the Ukrainian army for funding. He and his criminal buddies may have stolen $35 to $45 billion dollars from Ukraine. Russia is also run by a criminal syndicate. What happened in Ukraine is a threat by example to Putin.
