In my Eastern European War brackets I pick Russia to invade and beat Ukraine. Crimea is not connected by land to Russia. The Russians will want a land bridge from Crimea to Russia. They will need it for gas lines, oil pipelines, roads, etc.

He quoted anonymous administration officials who are concerned that the Russians are not being honest when they claim that the troops stationed along the Ukrainian border are not preparing for an invasion. Someone tell Ms. Nuland to take a Midol.

Putin would have been derelict if he had not occupied Crimea before it fell into NATO hands; that action was a rational and purely defensive reaction to the West-aided coup against his ally in Kiev. Anyone familiar with the old NATO war plans for Southern Europe knows about all the military facilities Russia has there and understands why the Black Sea is vital to Russia's strategic defense.
On the other hand, I doubt Putin wants to occupy the hostile western half of Ukraine because it would always be a hotbed of unrest -- and he doesn't need it. But the Russia-leaning eastern half of Ukraine is a different story, and I will be surprised if he doesn't take it right away in order to broaden Russia's direct access to the Black Sea.

Why worry. You aren’t gonna do anything about it. What is there to worry about?

“Saddam has WMD! He’s killing his own people!”
“Gaddafi preparing genocide! He’s slauthering the people in Benghazi!”
Bloody lying warmongers.

The White House is “concerned” that Obama may have to go in front of the teleprompter and read some harsh sounding words during one of the March Madness games or interrupt one of his golf outings.
They are concerned that Obama may actually have to stop what he is doing and “look busy”.

Kiev, you’re on your own.
“I know past presidents spouted a lot of rhetoric about freedom and democracy, well, that’s for us. We didn’t actually mean it for people like you. Besides, UConn and ‘Nova are tipping off any minute so this is really bad timing and, well, Putin is not really such a bad guy and frankly my administration would be doing the same thing if they could trade places so just live with being a puppet of a gargantuan central government. It’s good for you, really. You’ll love bread lines and death panels if you’ll just give it a chance.
What’s that? You’ve already tried it and it sucked which is why you left it? Aw, c’mon. See? It’s that right-wing Tea Party attitude that gets you guys hatred from progressive governments like ours. Hold on....
THAT’S A FOUL! DAMMIT! ARE YOU BLIND, SUCKAH? FUGGIN HONKY REFS!
Oh, sorry. Well, like I was saying, you’ll love communism once you give it a try. Sorry we couldn’t be there to defend you. Umm, later.”

How I suspect that this will end...
1. Russia gives back Crimea to Ukraine (a hollow gesture, see 3)
2. Russia pays back Ukraine’s loans to IMF/EU through cheap energy.
3. Ukraine becomes a puppet state of Russia, in an agreement with the EU and US. The US and EU promise to never interfere there and to allow Russia a free hand in smashing any new Maidan uprising.
4. Russia promises to leave NATO countries alone.

No wonder you can't find any "chumps" in a bar any more that you can take for easy ten-buck bets. They all went to Washington to work for the White House.
