Get real, lower drinking age to 19

(CNN) -- It's been eight years since a black exotic dancer in Durham, North Carolina, accused three white Duke University lacrosse players of rape, sexual assault and kidnapping at a party. Whether you believe justice was adequately served -- without a trial, the North Carolina attorney general unilaterally declared the indicted players innocent -- one fact remains indisputable: A whole lot of underage drinking of beer and Jack Daniels was going on throughout much of that March day, badly impairing the judgment of the more than 40 man-boys in attendance.

According to a June 2006 study by Aaron White, then an assistant professor at the Duke University Medical Center, about 40% of college freshmen admitted they engaged in binge drinking: five or more drinks on one occasion. Some 20% of college freshmen admitted they drank even more: between 10 and 15 drinks per drinking session.

Drinking age laws are the perfect example of what happens when pandering politicians meet a generation that is about 75% tits on a boar.

Back in the sixties all you heard was how it was "only Fair" to lower the age for drinking and everything else to eighteen. When that same generation started having kids they didn't want driving drunk and raising Hell the same way they did, Bada Bing, Bada Boom, pander, pander, it was all about raising the drinking age and instituting harsh penalties for driving under the influence.

I agree with that. The only caveat would be what happens with family. If you’re under age whatever your parents say is ok is ok. I’m not talking about giving whiskey to a 10 year old, I’m talking about a 14 or 15 year old having a glass of wine at a wedding. And the like. It’s nobody’s business but mine.

Bad idea and bad logic,

You lower the age by 3 years and the underage drinking age will be lowered by 3 years with it.

I still remember the 18 year drinking age when 15 year olds going to keg parties.

A quote from the author, “in the United States, the 0.08% threshold should be abandoned in favor of zero tolerance. Anyone caught driving with any amount of alcohol in their bloodstream should have his or her driving privileges suspended for at least three years.”

Why not include all drugs? Democrats wouldn't be able to afford enough buses to get their voters to the polls.

"Whether you believe justice was adequately served..."

Yeah, justice was finally served, when the lying druggie Crystal Magnum was found guilty of stabbing her boyfriend to death.

Then perhaps we won’t realize that we are slaves of the state.

Naw, they knew they were slaves. The real reason the Soviet Union was so lenient about drinking was because the state made so much money selling booze.

It was pretty hard to argue that an 18 year old was responsible enough to carry a machine gun around rice paddies but not enough to have a beer.

“...without a trial, the North Carolina attorney general unilaterally declared the indicted players innocent...”

File this one under: Wow, just wow.

This might be the greatest misrepresentation of a factual matter I’ve ever seen.

You can’t have a moment’s interest in anything this mendacious dissembler has to say after that sentence.

Oh, I agree, but what changed other than who would be drinking is my point. I don’t see why any grunt today can’t get a drink any more than I saw no reason to prohibit it back then.

If you believe that lowering the drinking age is a great idea, visit the UK and Germany.

My sibling returned from the UK. Lived in London. Said that the rate of young men suffering from liver disease is stunning. Puke all over the sidewalks and roadways. Beer and hard liquor for breakfast is the norm.

I’m sure younger drinkers will be completely responsible. Just ask my dead brother-in-law. A young drunk driver killed him and another passenger.

Brilliant idea.

What does doing 120 pushups and being trained to shoot people have to do with drinking?

Or, before casting a ballot you have to take a short quiz on ‘civil intelligence’ - as in, Who is your Congressmen? Senators?..ect.

A practice banned by the Voting Rights Act of 1965

Lower the drinking age. Raise the driving age.

Raise the age of voting to what it was before Viet Nam ravaged the 17 to 21 year olds.

Vote and drink, per commander, if you’re in the military.

This is too easy.

Not sure I understand. Are you saying there should be a different drinking age for military than others?

I’d leave the drinking age at 21, but raise the voting age to at least 21, just to be “fair”.<;i>

But 18 (for both) if in the military.

The legal drinking age for military is 18.

The commander has the last word.

Considering that we live in a world where scientists can find parts per billion and parts per trillion, a zero tolerance policy is both dumb and tyrannical.
