Free day at Kansas City Zoo ends in violence
Kansas City Star ^ | March 18, 2014 | MATT CAMPBELL and TONY RIZZO

The Kansas City Zoo will again review its policies after a frightening spasm of violence Tuesday afternoon that included shots fired in the parking lot.

There were no reported gunshot injuries, but zoo officials want to avoid having the animal park gain a reputation for being unsafe on days when it is open for free to residents of Jackson and Clay counties.

Tuesday’s disturbances followed another incident on a free day last April when a police officer breaking up a fight in the parking lot got a bloody nose. In both cases, the free admission drew crowds that were too big for the zoo to handle.

“I’m always concerned about how people feel about the zoo,” zoo director Randy Wisthoff said shortly after Tuesday’s incident. “That’s always at the top of my plate, that people feel safe here.”

Several witnesses on Tuesday described a chaotic scene of brawls and gunshots.

Kristi Sharp Patterson, who was at the zoo Tuesday with her children, said that as they were leaving, she saw people on the ground in handcuffs, and crowds were gathering around.

“Next thing you know shots were fired in the parking lot right in front of the zoo and everyone started screaming and running in every direction,” Patterson told The Star. “By far the scariest experience ever.”

Did you notice the date? April 2000. 14 years! More than 5000 free days ago.

And, even that story says: “The shooting on Monday was an uncommon event in the exclusive Woodley Park neighborhood of Northwest Washington...”

My point, confirmed, is that it’s rare, not that there’s never any crime at the zoo in DC. Not sure what ‘free’ has to do with it, tho, one way or the other.

The worst idea was not in having the ships ready to return the freed slaves to Africa the moment Lincoln set them free.

Yeah, I don't know about that.

They weren't doing to badly until LBJ and the Soviets got ahold of them.

There needs to be a way to get around “comments disabled”. It should become a convention that whenever a newspaper disables comments on an article, the very next article in chronological order becomes the place to post comments on the disabled article. And if they disable comments on that one, then you go to the next one. That way the newspaper weasels can’t escape their readers’ politically incorrect comments.

The last time I visited the KC Zoo was probably 2004 or 2005. Back then, they DID have certain animals out, running free. I recall seeing turkeys and peacocks, as well as kangaroos just hanging out and walking around.

The KC Zoo is in a neighborhood that I prefer to avoid.

Don't tell me, let me guess, what characterizes most residents of Jackson and Clay Counties...

Now let me think...

What are you referencing? I used to be a hotel maid.

Here museums are free 1st Thur. of every month. Woodland Park and Point Defiance zoo admission is free for me for 1 week every April because I volunteer at the Burke Museum. I like the idea of tying it to something, or doing it on a referral basis.

I guess they shouldn’t have let the animals out of the zoo.

When will we be able to have an honest discussion about race in this country?

We already have been; for years.

Here's a good start. *

But those groups most in need of the discussion are genetically unable, intellectually unequipped, and oblivious to the obvious to join any discussion.

There's the "progressive" groups, whose religion dictates that ignorance and platitudes, the poster boy of which is Obama,
And then there's the other group, the gigantic and growing subculture of parasites, enabled by a criminal government running the first group, serving mostly themselves.

The only possible result is implosion or explosion, culturally, financially and socially.

What could possibly go wrong?

You never read about the zoo animals escaping on free days. Why is that? Professional courtesy, of course.

Wonder what it's like in Jackson and Clay Counties.

Their free zoos evidently must be exciting, open 24/7/365...
