Ukrainian troops said Tuesday that they were being attacked by Russian forces at a base in Crimea’s main city, Simferopol, the Interfax news agency reported, according to Reuters.

“One Ukrainian serviceman has been wounded in the neck and collarbone. Now we have barricaded ourselves on the second floor. The headquarters has been taken and the commander has been taken. “We are being stormed.” Share: “We are being stormed. We have about 20 people here and about 10 to 15 others, including women,” an unidentified serviceman told Fifth Channel television, according to Reuters. “One of our officers was wounded during the attack, grazed in the neck and arm.”

Lets be aware of those who want us to rush into war.

Take a look at history re 4 August 1964.

LBJ’s duplicity got us into a land war in SE Asia and split this country apart.

LBJ’s duplicity cost a lot of lives and left thousands of brave soldiers, Marines, Air Force and Sailors mentally harmed for life.

http://www.usni.org/magazines/navalhistory/2008-02/truth-about-tonkin

On 2 August 1964, North Vietnamese patrol torpedo boats attacked the USS Maddox (DD-731) while the destroyer was in international waters in the Gulf of Tonkin. There is no doubting that fact.

But what happened in the Gulf during the late hours of 4 August—and the consequential actions taken by U.S. officials in Washington—has been seemingly cloaked in confusion and mystery ever since that night.

Over the next three hours, the two ships repeatedly maneuvered at high speeds to evade perceived enemy boat attacks. The destroyers reported automatic-weapons fire; more than 20 torpedo attacks; sightings of torpedo wakes, enemy cockpit lights, and searchlight illumination; and numerous radar and surface contacts. By the time the destroyers broke off their “counterattack,” they had fired 249 5-inch shells, 123 3-inch shells, and four or five depth charges.

Commander Stockdale was again in the action, this time alone. When his wingman’s aircraft developed trouble, Stockdale got permission to launch solo from the Ticonderoga . He arrived overhead at 2135. For more than 90 minutes, he made runs parallel to the ships’ course and at low altitude (below 2,000 feet) looking for the enemy vessels. He reported later, “I had the best seat in the house to watch that event and our destroyers were just shooting at phantom targets—there were no PT boats there . . . there was nothing there but black water and American firepower.”

Captain Herrick also began to have doubts about the attack. As the battle continued, he realized the “attacks” were actually the results of “overeager sonar operators” and poor equipment performance. The Turner Joy had not detected any torpedoes during the entire encounter, and Herrick determined that the Maddox ‘s operators were probably hearing the ship’s propellers reflecting off her rudder during sharp turns. 12 The destroyer’s main gun director was never able to lock onto any targets because, as the operator surmised, the radar was detecting the stormy sea’s wave tops.

By 0127 on 5 August, hours after the “attacks” had occurred, Herrick had queried his crew and reviewed the preceding hours’ events. He sent a flash (highest priority) message to Honolulu, which was received in Washington at 1327 on 4 August, declaring his doubts: “Review of action makes many reported contacts and torpedoes fired appear doubtful. Freak weather effects on radar and overeager sonarmen may have accounted for many reports. No actual visual sightings by MADDOX. Suggest complete evaluation before any further action taken.”

What I find amusing now is how suddenly Obama found a way to get all you Freepers who have been his opponents on pretty much everything from day one, on his side and on board with his propaganda.. Suddenly there is one guy on this planet who has stood up to Obama and the rest of the EU idiots, has stood against the homosexual agenda, the western porn/violence culture, everything that Freepers continually bitch about as the downfall of our nation... MAYBE, just MAYBE your being played on this one as well? Play on the old soviet fear, team america rah rah get er done mentality and create something he can win over even his staunchest opponents with... hmm.

I love it, from RT, obviously an unbiased source. And the shooting came “in 2 directions from 1 spot”. Gunmen speak with forked tongue, kemo sabe.

Ukraine is a sovereign nation that emerged from the dissolution of the Soviet empire. They have a constitution that does not allow for the kind of self-determination you seem to think is OK.

Bob Onyschuk: A broken promise to protect Ukraine sovereignty

The CFE (Conventional Forces in Europe) Treaty, and the nuclear-arms reduction negotiations conducted by the Western powers were important stabilizing considerations in the early 1990’s, coming right after the fall of the Soviet Union. They helped ensure that no nuclear weapons would fall into the hands of terrorist groups or other states. I was involved as one of Ukraine’s advisors on the CFE Treaty, and was consulted on the implications for Ukraine. So I know much of this first hand.

Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma was aware that giving up Ukraine’s nuclear arms would make Ukraine vulnerable to aggression from its neighbor, Russia — even if Boris Yeltsin was a pro-Western democrat and certainly not likely to use aggression against Ukraine. But what might happen after Yeltsin? Both Kuchma and Ukraine’s Parliament knew that Crimea (and Eastern Ukraine) could become an issue in the future, especially if the next Russian president exhibited the old Soviet imperialist mentality.

That’s why Kuchma, and Ukraine more generally, required guarantees and assurances from the other major nuclear powers — Russia, the United States and the UK (and later France and China, which signed on) — that its “sovereignty and its territorial integrity” would be respected.

With the Budapest Memorandum, U.S. President Bill Clinton, Russia’s Yeltsin, and UK Prime Minister John Major pledged “to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine.” Vladimir Putin seems to have forgotten about this.

The Budapest Memorandum also provided that any of the parties could request a meeting of all the parties at any time to consult “in the event that a situation arises relating to Ukraine’s sovereignty or territorial integrity”.

A week ago, Britain, the United States and France called for just such a consultation meeting, to be held in Paris on March 5. Russia was given notice of the meeting, and was invited to attend. On the appointed day, all the parties arrived — but Russia refused to attend, despite the fact that Russian aggression was the reason the meeting was called in the first place.

This is completely unacceptable behavior by a major power, and Russia should, in my opinion, be treated as a pariah state, and an international outlaw for its flagrant breach of international. You cannot sign an agreement guaranteeing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of a neighbour, and then invade it. There have to be consequence

those soldiers are disobeying a direct order from their democratically elected commander and chief, who was forced out of Kiev by a mob,

The Ukrainian Parliament voted him out of office. He left Kiev under his own volition. He also resigned from office. The corruption and stolen funds evident in his palatial residence along with the killing of 80 people helped to persuade the Parliament, including his own party, to remove him.

We (NATO) set the precedent so the Germans could get access to the Adriatic.

How so?

Into the fold? So that gives Germany access to the Adriatic? Italy was already "in the fold."

FYI: Slovenia joined NATO before Croatia.

Stolen . . . by whom? Kruschev or Putin? When has Crimea or its people seen themselves as Ukrainian? What gives a Hutsul or Boyko the right to tell a Russian in Crimea that he must follow the dictate of a dead Soviet Premier?

This crisis didn't pop up yesterday on CNN and the answer isn't “Russia bad, Ukraine good.” It would be nice if it were that simple. It isn't. There are ethnic groups you've probably never heard of clamoring for their own state, or autonomy. They aren't all in Ukraine, either. Some are in Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Belarus, etc. Thanks to NATO and its position on the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992, we now have this crisis.

Right or wrong, there is also reality.

“Henry II: The Vexin’s mine.

Philip II: By what authority?

Henry II: It's got my troops all over it; that makes it mine.”

You want to hate Russia, fine. Hate them. If you want the “Ukrainians” (a motley bunch that will split into sub-ethnic and religious factions in a flash) to fight some war, there will be a civil war that will make Yugoslavia look like a friendly disagreement. And this war for what . . . to prove that Kruschev had the right to arbitrarily move Russian Crimea to Ukraine. Good call.

But we still may be able to talk Uganda into changing their minds about homosexuals. And that will be one big victory!

Obama would threaten more sanctions against Cuba, send Kerry to UN for consultations, then go on vacation.

Slovenia rewarded Germany and France in 1991 by allowing their navies access to Slovene ports.

Access does not equal a grant of territory.
