"The threat to close the Bosphorus to Russia comes from a report by Hvylya, citing a Turkish diplomatic source. According to the source, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan yesterday spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the phone and warned of the consequences for conflict with Ukraine. The Hvylya source was also reported on by UNIAN."
No, it was the fact the US Pacific Fleet was the only obstacle to them dominating all of Asia that was their real impetus for entering WWII.
“Cutting off Russias oil and gas sales is really the only way to get to Putin. There economy would tank pretty quickly.”
Going to be a LOT harder to do that now, with the Eastern Siberia Oil/Gas Pipeline to Vladivostok almost completed, and the section directly to China under construction now.
The only way to hurt Putin/Russia now, is a massive lowering of energy prices worldwide, and that simply isn’t going to happen with the Radical Aacdemic Socialists and EnviroNazi’s we now have running the government.
Except that will give Russia a reason for war.
There are treaties regulating who gets access to the Black Sea. In peace time, legally, Turkey CAN’T close it.
If Russia sends an old warship to the straits, and the Turks sink it, the Turks just violated a treaty and started a war.
It's pretty close to a carte blanche for Turkey.
Me too.
Its funny how things can shift. With Erdogan in power, watching the Turks turn on Israel (and the US during the invasion of Iraq) you can see the underlying alliances shifting. Then with pro-muslim-brotherhood factions in the White House you see them shifting again.
Do you have any sources on that?
No. They’re more concerned about gay marriage. That’s what this is all about. We could start WWIII over Vlad’s position on gay marriage.
Hormuz? Not a real issue there. If Hormuz gets closed so does the north/south Iranian railroad which feeds the back/inland half of Russia. I got money that says Pootin ain’t the slightest bit interested in seeing Hormuz messed with. Remember during WW II when we helped the Iranians re-develop their rail lines so that we could ship aluminum and Studebaker trucks to Russia inside the Urals. Also remember how much trouble the Russians have remembering how much stuff we gave them?
“Do you have any sources on that?”
Sources for which, the FSB killing Muslim extremists in Turkey or Turkey not allowing US troops to cross their territory in time of war?

I was trying to find the one where there was a well guarded militant the Russians wanted dead. They used probably 10 people with silencers to take him out. By the time the body(s) was/were discovered there was no trace of any hitters. That’s not something that happens in ordinary crimes.
Try this one for background.

Heh, that was a great post.
I feel like I am watching a ping pong match here...
“Sometimes I really wish we had the British form of government where we could force a No Confidence vote.”
Only after a couple of hours of fist fights, karate demos and shrieks from the lefties when a conservative kicks their butts.
“Erdogan has a poor sense of history. It has been the dream of every Russian Tsar to capture Constantinople...”
Considering no Russian dictator has ever managed to fulfill their dream, maybe Erdogan’s sense of history is spot on.
Just because the US is recoiling in exaggerated fear, doesn’t mean others are going to.
They would have succeeded too, had it not been for the British and French. The whole point of the Crimean War was to stop the Russians marching into Constantinople and annexing Turkey.
May be some of it, Virg, but not all of it.
My point is, our clown looks at half of THIS country as his enemies...
Well, having Turkey in NATO made sense at the time at the time because we wanted to station troops and nuclear missiles there against the Soviets, who were flexing their muscles over Turkey.
If we hadn’t guaranteed Turkey’s protection via accession to NATO, or some other defensive pact, then chances are that Ataturk would have felt that he had no choice but to go Soviet. After all, Ataturk and the Bolsheviks were really close until about few years before Turkey joined NATO. (see Turkish Straits Crisis)
Obama on the phone with Erdogan: “So, what are you wearing?”
You’re way too easy to spot newbie. Mar 15, 2014
correct me if I ma wring but doesn’t most the population in Crimea want to stay with Russia and wasn;t there a vote?
Bozo is a clown and a laughing stock yet .
