Russia gave its clearest signal yet Monday that it plans to move fast to annex Crimea, defying U.S. and European threats of sanctions a day after a referendum in the breakaway Ukrainian region to secede passed handily.
The Moscow-backed leadership of Crimea wasted no time in formally asking to join Russia following the hastily called referendum in which 97% of voters supported becoming part of Russia.
"We will take care of our part quickly, quickly and responsibly," Sergei Naryshkin, speaker of the lower house of Russia's parliament, told reporters in response to the Crimean parliamentary vote, according to local news agencies.
Mr. Naryshkin's comments came shortly after officials announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will address a joint session of parliament Tuesday on the issue.
The Kremlin didn't immediately specify what Mr. Putin's message would be, but the official ITAR-Tass news agency said the address would cover "accepting Crimea into the Russian Federation."

Actually, the choices were “join Russia” and “more autonomy within Ukraine”. Still, reading the 36% staying home as the “No, go back to the status quo ante” vote, gives .64*95.5% = 61.1% in favor of joining Russia (and 3.9% in favor of more autonomy within Ukraine).
61.1% secession votes in Scotland, the Veneto or Quebec will be seen as landslides if they happen, and if the Catalans vote 61.1% in favor of leaving Spain, Madrid will be hard pressed to say “no” the Spanish Constitution notwithstanding.

What if:
California split into two States. And what if the southern state had a preponderance of Hispanics. And what if some event caused them to demand separation from the USA. And what if a referendum resulted in which they voted overwhelming to either separate from the USA as a nation, or become a state of Mexico.
Ditto, Arizona and New Mexico.
Sound far fetched?? Don’t discount it. We live in strange times.
And also vice versa, except a couple that went 100%+. But not to worry, the software is being patched and next time, the opposition candidate, whomsoever that might be, will receive at least 1 vote in each of those districts. Maybe 2.
That will look a whole lot better. But why always pick on Philly? In Baltimore, the same voters have been on the rolls since 1789.
In a recent election, Ed Rendell illegally registered about 100,000 legal aliens, mostly Russians and Albanians, and they voted. He got caught red-handed (NB pun) but the PA Courts, such as they are, decided that just this once, they would let it slide, since Team Rendell, they said, woulda won anyway.
If that happened remaining Texas would become deep red.
Dunno about the 90%, but the citizens of Baja have often expressed a desire and actually formed movements to join American California. The Mexicans punished them by denying them Mexican statehood for many decades. Then, mot too long ago when they finally let'em in, they broke up Baja, making it two states.
Of course, there are not a hell of a lot of people in Baja, so a real secessionary revolt wasn't really feasible.

My wish (as a Texan):
Texas, New Mexico and Arizona unite and form a Federation of their own - not American and not Mexican.
New Mexico and Arizona will remain a Federation and maybe annex willing adjacent states - Nevada, Utah, Colorado - who want to tell US "we.are.out.of.here".
Texas becomes its own country.
Kalifornia....well...I guess we can figure out that Kalifornia will embrace its takeover from Mexico from the start---willingly embracing a Mexican takeover....like a submissive dog...
...excepting for Californian Freepers who may separate out and form their own Federation at the best locale of California - and there are many beautiful places in California - take one of them you beautiful California Freepers!
And perhaps take meaningful action.
So can we expect a vote next week in Chechnya on whether they wish to remain as part of Russia?
Jeff, with great respect, we have no way to ascertain the situation on the ground with respect to the sentiments of the Ukraine's population.
They could be Poles awaiting the Wehrmacht, but they equally well could be Austrians awaiting the great day of unification.
There is no reliable way to know, and since there isn't, exposing our guys to a situation where they are helping a minority, perhaps a tiny minority, who are well-connected to CNNCBSNBCABC and the IMF-Soros-EU conglomerate just doesn't seem to me like good policymaking.
On this St. Patrick's Day, it reminds me of the call for "26 + 6=1"
(26 counties in Ireland + 6 counties in Northern Ireland = a true consolidated Ireland.

No problem, Jim. But in Kiev and inthe western and northern provinces of the country, we do know.
They want no part of Russia and have their own nation, their own constitution...and their own memories of Stalins stavation campaigns aginats the grandparents. They have been recommedned several times for joining NATO, and we should have made that happen before now, as we did for Poland and others. THeir troops have fought with our own in the Mid East.
Crimea...and the other two provinces that are predominantly ehtnic Russian...what ou say is true. But not the rest of the country.
No, because Russia invaded their nation and parsed off one of their provinces and is set, and emboldened to do more.
