Russia gave its clearest signal yet Monday that it plans to move fast to annex Crimea, defying U.S. and European threats of sanctions a day after a referendum in the breakaway Ukrainian region to secede passed handily.
The Moscow-backed leadership of Crimea wasted no time in formally asking to join Russia following the hastily called referendum in which 97% of voters supported becoming part of Russia.
"We will take care of our part quickly, quickly and responsibly," Sergei Naryshkin, speaker of the lower house of Russia's parliament, told reporters in response to the Crimean parliamentary vote, according to local news agencies.
Mr. Naryshkin's comments came shortly after officials announced that Russian President Vladimir Putin will address a joint session of parliament Tuesday on the issue.
The Kremlin didn't immediately specify what Mr. Putin's message would be, but the official ITAR-Tass news agency said the address would cover "accepting Crimea into the Russian Federation."

I agree,I think the Crimea annexation, with the populace approval there, is none of our business. I think the appropriate response for this admin would be not to contest it, but to give notice that NATO and the US is now on alert, with increased monitoring, and any further encroachment into bordering countries would be met with force.
If the culture, allegiance and population become overwhelmingly Mexican, why shouldn't they? Except that the US offers them the gravy train, while Crimea's financial benefit is with Russia.
Unless the US stops and reverses the invasion from the south, we either become that third world cesspool or give them to Mexico, which they love so much.

I'm not sure he wants to counter. I don't know what to believe about his thoughts or intentions. I'm fairly certain he's a Marxist at heart, and is clearly the political embodiment of what you can hear from faculty members on pretty much any university in the country, but I don't know what his end game is.

Not exactly. Crimea used to be part of Russia but they gave it to the Ukraine while they were the soviet empire.
This would be more like part of the Philippines voting to become a US state and then the US accepting that area as a state.
If McCain had been President then the U.S. would already be a significant exporter of Natural Gas and be breaking GazProm’s monopoly in Europe.
Russia’s pathologies are amplified because it is an extraction economy with a captive market. If America had elected the party of “drill baby drill” things would be very different today.
That’s assuming just LNG export. American ingenuity and the removal of political barriers to pipeline construction would open up more of the world to cheap pipelined gas - which would dramatically undercut Gazprom’s current prices.
Even if we regard the Crimea as a benign secession - we wouldn’t now be worrying about a possible move into East Ukraine if Palin had been on the winning side.
BTW: Ukraine spinning off Crimea may be the best thing for the west because now they won’t have the Russian voters in their elections. Now they can adopt more Western policies...if they wish.

That’s true.
Kiev is denouncing its treaties with Russia and the Sevastopol basing rights for Russia’s Black Sea Fleet but they have no practical significance because Crimea is now in Russia.
And Ukraine can now look westwards without having to worry about Russian blackmail. The feeling in Kiev is, since Crimea wants to go join Russia - that’s fine with us. We have a civil divorce and now we can go our separate ways.
