As Wendy Daviss campaign for Texas governor flounders, Democrats in Washington have begun to cast their eyes elsewhere for a good news story in the solid-red South.
They believe they may have found that in Georgia, where a combination of demographic trends and a slate full of famous political names is giving Democrats in the state an unfamiliar feeling: Hope.
Topping the ticket (which Republicans have tagged as "Downton Abbey Democrats" for children seeking their ancestors' titles) is Jason Carter, the 38 year-old state senator and grandson of former president Jimmy Carter, who is challenging Republican Gov. Nathan Deal.

I hope he reminds people that jimmy carter is his dad. A lot.
Georgia ping
Because Georgians are so proud of Jimmah.
Much of the USA is blue because of Democrats, blue as in sad.
Both Georgia and South Carolina will be a shade of purple by 2020. Demographics are destiny.
Seriously.
Just like an LBJ ancestor could revive the democraps in Texas. Yea right!
Most people I know think LBJ was a crook, stole his senate election in 1948, and was behind the JFK assassination.
His actions while POTUS make him a top five worst POTUS, and I can’t even imagine an ancestor of his wanting people to make the connection, let alone use it to run for office.
And does anybody seriously think Jimmy Carter has the respect of well... anyone?
The peanut farmer part II?
Return of the vintage blue cardigan?
Seriously, I’d like to hear from FReepers in Georgia.
Is Carter an embarrassment to most Georgians?
Or is he just an embarrassment, but “he’s our embarrassment”?
The only reason the Carter name is uptrending, is Obama.
Jason Carter is just as dead politically as Wendy Davis and Alex Sink....End of story!!! Georgia stays red come November, 2014
Hopefully culture will prevail over demographics.
But ultimately if God hands this country over to its wickedness it will be the spiritual state of the nation that determines the politics.
We have to fight the battle on many fronts, including spiritual and political.
Our last bastion of political freedom and hope in this life end up with many fighting for secession or another Texas revolution for independence.
The next two years will be very telling.
I’m not worried about Carter. I’m more worried about Nunn if the R’s select a foot-in-mouth disease candidate.
Georgia’s schoolchildren have been indoctrinated as to the wonders of Jimmy Carter for 30+ years. I don’t think it has really worked, but the effort has been there. The larger problem in Georgia is the number of Northerners moving there and voting for the same things they tried to escape. Same thing in North Carolina. “If how you did it back up North was so great, maybe you should have stayed there.” I wish that would fit on a bumper sticker.
HAHAHAHA....oh wait, they were serious.
This is the laugh of the century. Jason Carter has zero chance to be elected governor. Nathan DEal has turned out to be a major effing disappointment and he will still get re-elected.
As Governor Jimmah was a disaster. He raised taxes up the wazoo. People here can’t stand him.
“The larger problem in Georgia is the number of Northerners moving there and voting for the same things they tried to escape.”
So true. They are going to ruin this state like WA and CO have been ruined by CA transplants. They turn the new place into the same Chitehole they left behind.
That’s the problem in Virginia too. Yankees who are federal government workers in northern va are killing us. Cuccinelli didn’t lose because he is pro life, he lost because of the federal government shut down. The federal workers had extra hate and motivation in that election to vote against republicans.
The people of Georgia are in NO mood for “legacy” candidates with Daddy names attached to them. This is quite possibly the worst time in 100 years to try and run on someone else’s accomplishments.
I cannot, however, speak for the black community and for Atlanta. And that says a lot, but North Atlanta and the northern Atlanta suburbs are ground zero for freedom-loving Georgians and they won’t vote Dem right now for anything.
I don’t see it happening. Democrats are deluded.
I keep hearing about “Georgia turning purple”, but the fact is Romney beat Obama by an eight point margin in 2012, compared to a 5-point margin for McCain (keep in mind the military presence in GA on that).
Yea the only solution to liberals migrating to red and purple states is for conservatives from blue states to move to purple states.
Think of how many California and (to a lesser extent) NY conservatives there are.
If a fraction of them moved to Colorado, NC, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, and Pennsylvania then the electoral landscape would chance remarkably.
“Sam Nunn wants your gun”
