During a news conference at the York County Detention Center, Sheriff Bruce Bryant said deputies reviewed video of the incident “time and time and time again” and feel that Deputy Terrance Knox did nothing wrong when he fired his service weapon during a traffic stop...

According to FNC, the cop fired six shots and only hit the guy with the cane only once. He’s going to survive the shooting. What pissed me off was the cop’s “fellow officers and his chief” saying that he did the “right thing.” The lack of concern for other human beings on the part of most cops to day is criminal.

This happens over and over, and now it's perfectly acceptable. Just look at all the comments supporting the LEO. This is pure police state mentality.

This is the kind of reaction liberals said would be the result of concealed carry laws being passed (i.e., concealed carriers opening fire without cause), and instead, ironically, it is the new modus operandi of our local law enforcement.

Sorry I am not buy this one and as someone who stood gate guard duty in the military, two things are wrong here, first the old Man was clearly unstable as he got out of the truck and two the officer has the benefit of his car door protecting him from the start.

My old gun training Master Chief said it best, “You better thinking and be 100% and damn sure before you pull that trigger because, you can’t recall bullets once their are fired!”

I guess, to mollify all of FR’s cops, I will hold on commenting about this specific incident for now.

But, all these type incidents seem to have one common denominator. Namely, when a cop rolls up on a scene like this should he be able to open fire on a citizen based upon what he THINKS?!?!?!

I say NO!

His training, in my opinion should train him to hold fire that 1,000th of a second until he KNOWS!!!!! He gets paid to take that 1,000th of a second risk!!

If he doesn’t want to take that risk, then turn in the badge and the gun and go drive a concrete truck!

More like a Barney Fife stupid ass cop than an jack booted thug type. Sick of this attitude of shoot first by cops.

That is just awful. Of course since we can’t see the $#%@ing shooting who knows what really happened? I can’t understand half of what was being said but from the tone of voice that cop was panicked to the max.

The Dunn guy in FL just got convicted of 4 counts of attempted murder and will be tried again for murder because he reacted in a similar fashion in a far more threatening situation.

The other cops saying the shooter did the right thing is mind boggling.

Well at least the officer went home safe./sarc

Can't say the same for his victim.

The police are telling us something.

This is happening more and more, over and over.

THEY DON’T TRUST the very people that they are supposed to be protecting and serving.

THEY feel threatened by EVERYONE and they don’t believe that they have the ability to protect THEMSELVES.

The cop mistook the cane for a long gun.,ok, that’s believable. But why did he assume that an old man was going to shoot him? It’s not like the old man was going to get the jump on him! Did the cop think the old man was a better shot than he was?

Yes, being a cop is dangerous work, that’s the job! I choose not to run into burning buildings for a living, so therefore I don’t sign up to be a firefighter, if you cant handle the danger of being a cop, don’t become a cop!

It would appear to me that the only real gun control we need is for COPS!

Dunno on this one.

Slapped this up on the big screen.

Under the conditions and lighting I can it going the way it did.

The cop’s reaction of sheer panic and sorrow was appropriate...if that’s the right way to say it.

Bad deal all around...

The cop panicked - pure and simple.

HE panicked and shot and screamed to dispatcher “Shots fired, Shots fired!” - in a real panic, before he knew he shot an man with a cane.

If a cop is that afraid and panics that easy - he does not belong behind a badge and a gun.

And when did they finally call for an ambulance???

At least, he had the humanity to have remorse - maybe enough to hang up the gun, one could hope. He doesn't have the control or nerves for the job.

His wife is also lucky the cop didn’t blow her head off either while she was sitting in the truck. You can see the bullets going through the back window of the pickup.

Strange as it may sound, i still feel sorry for the cop. Yes, he f****d up big time, and maybe he`s not cut out for police work. But with all the guns around in the US cops could find themselves in a lethal situation whenever they pull someone over and they know that only to well, so i kind of understand why they might be jumpy. I actually find the reaction of his superiors almost worse than what he did.

And no, i’m not anti-gun. I`m just saying that this is one of the consequences of the right to own guns. I would like to have a gun, but I live in Germany so it`s all but impossible. On the other hand that guy would never have been shot here because beeing attacked with a gun is a very remote possibility for an ordinary German cop so they don`t try to shoot first for fear of being shot. In 2012 German cops fired all of 104 shots on humans (including 54 warning shots), yes that`s right, the entire German police force!

As a firearms instructor dealing with cops is part of the instruction. Something hard to drill in to some, is that the cop does not know who you are. You may know you are not a threat but the cops does not. You need to follow all directions and that act accordingly.

As someone who also works with geriatrics, this is especially a problem.

Why did old man get out of truck AND then reach in?

How many shooting videos on you tube start out the same way?

Would not want to be in cops shoes.
