Kasich calls for income tax cut, hike on cigarette tax
Columbus Dispatch ^ | 3/11/14 | Joe Vardon. Jim Siegal

The net for Ohioans is a $174 million tax cut over the next three years.

Kasich proposes funding an 8.5 percent income tax-cut for all tax brackets — a $2.2 billion reduction over the next three years — by raising the state’s tax on a pack of cigarettes 60 cents, from $1.25 to $1.85, while also taxing other tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, at an equivalent rate. That would generate about $850 million during the next three years.

Kasich also wants to raise the Commercial Activity Tax on gross receipts for businesses from 0.26 percent to 0.3 percent, a roughly 15-percent increase providing $743 million in three years; and implement a gradual 2.75 percent tax on oil and gas extracted from horizontally drilled and fractured wells, generating $874 million in three years.

I live in Ohio (bordering W.Virginia) and don’t smoke, but I don’t agree with this move at all.

“fascist liberal smoke nazi? The constitution guarantees you a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nowhere does it guarantee you the right to smoke tax free tobacco and the fact of the matter is, second hand smoke infringes on the rights of others who are forced to inhale it, like children who end up with chronic respiratory problems and unborn children that are born with countless birth defects as a result of momma’s nasty habit. I don’t care how you feel about it frankly. I love it. Go Kasich!”

Albeit smoking is unhealthy...life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness doesn’t just apply to “non-smokers”. Where do you go that you are “FORCED” to inhale secondhand smoke? I ask because there are few places a smoker can actually smoke anymore that you would actually be forced to inhale it. What I find more offensive, is the corrupt, lying leadership we have to bear due to the stupidity of the sheep. In fact, nothing is more offensive than this, to me. A puff of smoke in my face would be “welcomed” relief.

Let’s not forget how desperately they want your children indoctrinated, without your consent.

Let’s not exclude “daddy’s” nasty habit(s). Do you think because daddy doesn’t carry the baby that he is not biologically responsible for what he too, may either pass on to his baby, or, create for the child later on in life?

If you think smoking is bad....Why not gripe about...

...all the heinously aborted, abused, or neglected human beings by their very selfish parent(s)?

...the poisonous air we ARE actually FORCED to breath by the pursuant individuals of self-interest?

...not having any REAL control over what mad-science has gotten us to eat for the last several decades?...which has been incrementally destroying our bodies ability to do what they were designed to do. AND, irreversibly so. This includes all the poisonous crap that is deceptively put into our water to psychologically subdue/dumb-down the People?

...how your misguided leaders working to rip out from under you ALL three of those Constitutional guarantees so that they can eventually lock us all up in internment camps so only THEY may enjoy those rights? Never forget that they don’t care about you any more than they care about the “smoker”. “Nasty”, has not yet been tasted by America.

And while I agree that secondhand smoke, or smoking in and of itself is bad, NOW is not the time to be divided as a “People”. It’s what they want so that they can do to us what they are doing.

I am all for you all getting an income cut, but how about cutting government spending to attain the necessary revenue, instead of increasing other taxes?

“Our last republican governor, Taft, was convicted in court over money issues. Seems they decided to invest in coins for the pension fund...a really odd investment for a pension fund....and then the coins walked.”

You are really uninformed.

Taft was convicted of 4 misdemeaners. He accepted gifts worth a huge 5800 dollars which were not reported properly.

from wiki:

“On August 17, 2005, Taft was charged with four criminal misdemeanors stemming from his failure to disclose golf outings paid for by lobbyists, as well as some undisclosed gifts. The Associated Press reported the total value of at least 52 undisclosed gifts as about US$5,800, they included:[48]
Two undisclosed gifts including golf with coin dealer Thomas Noe, a Republican fundraiser then under investigation, and later convicted, for his handling of a $50 million investment of state money in rare coins, and diverting $2 million to personal use. Taft claimed of Tom Noe that ““He fooled people from one end of Ohio to the other.”[46] (See Coingate scandal.)
Six undisclosed gifts including golf outings with political strategist Curt Steiner and Robert Massie, president of chemical information services giant CAS, worth $700. Taft later lobbied the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services against expanding scientific directories that would compete with CAS.
Undisclosed gifts including dinner and Columbus Blue Jackets hockey tickets from Jerry Jurgeson, chief executive officer of Nationwide Insurance
book and artwork from the consulate general of the People’s Republic of China worth $100
a photograph and framed medal from the Defense Supply Center worth $85
a portfolio and clothing worth $119 from the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber of Commerce.

A large republican donor donated money then got a contract to invest some of Ohio’s money in gold coins. Only some of the coins walked while most stayed. This is a felony and he is still in jail. Ohio had a plus return on the investment in spite of the embezzlement because the price of the coins tripled in value and Ohio made out ok but not as well as Ohio should have.

This isn't about smoking as far as I'm concerned, it's about standing in the way of an income tax cut.

I’m not the one trying to screw countless thousands of working people out of an income tax cut because it threatens my filthy habit somehow. Because smokers have so many more rights than working people right? Yeah, I’m the selfish ahole in this debate all right.

The evidence is clear. Smoking while pregnant puts your fetus at risk.

First off, I don't know how this has been proven---I only go by what I've witnessed in my 75 years. Smoking was never an issue for pregnant women or any one else, back in the day (don't remember when this warning began).

No one told women they could not/should not smoke while pregnant yet they did not have unhealthy babies .Sure, some babies were and are born with serious problems---whether their mothers or fathers smoked or didn't. You must know some cases. We do not know all the answers to why this happens---heredity, recessive genes, parents' ages, etc.

No, you are wrong to conclude that I promote smoking. What I object to is unproven information.

This is a major reason the smoking wars are over, and smokers lost. Bigtime. It isn’t a conservative value to put the health of your fetus at risk. To play Russian Roulette with an unborn babies health.

How many unborn babies (in your word, fetuses) do you know of, positively, who have been damaged by their mothers' smoking? Any?

Is it the smokers which upset you or that you think it's costing you money? On the money side, you're probably losing a lot more through politicians' waste and greed. Obama's health care fiasco is a prime example and he clearly has no regard for unborn babies, or even some that are born!

I suggest you get rid of that chip on your shoulder, and it IS there. Many smokers are nicer, kinder, more caring people than many non-smokers.

My last words.

“Nah, I just truly hate cigarettes.”

And I hate alcohol because of the damage it did to my family, but it wouldn’t occur to me to want it taxed just because I don’t like it.

We all hate something.

I agree. Though raising the price of cigarettes will not result in an income tax cut. MORE of our money is what they want, not less. Such old hat by this admin.

Cut school spending and regulations on fuel would be a good start.

If they raised the tax on alcohol to get us one step closer to eliminating the income tax, I would be fine with that too and I do like to drink occasionally. And while I do hate cigarettes and the misery they cause people, this is all about eliminating the Ohio state income tax to me. I am wise enough to know that there is no way to just end it with nothing but spending cuts. Aside from the fact that Kasich doesn't have near enough political power to make that happen, a radical move like that would end the Republicans in ohio for many years to come and it would probably hurt the state. One swing at a time, that's how this tree will come down.

You are a RINO Nancy Pelosi ahole.

You sound just like her, such as her plausibly saying, I want to tax the rich to give a free car to the poor.

If Kasich was a true Republican, he would be cutting government, not taxing people who liberals and you hate for their "filthy" habit.

So you would rather cut social services for children/elderly/veterans and/or prevent working men and women from getting an income tax cut than see taxes raised on a deadly habit? But I'm the A hole. Riiiight. Got it.

Sorry about your mother.

I am not a cigarette smoker, but I do enjoy good cigars. I smoke at my home, in my car or at a cigar lounge, or wherever I want without bothering anyone else. I don't blow smoke in my neighbors face.

However, I am sick and tired of the government taxing everything. In the same vein I don't drink coffee, however, I sure as hell don't think the government should raise higher taxes on it. I would not just sit back and say it does not affect me so it is not my concern. Overbearing government regulation and taxation IS everyone's concern.

If they put federal EPA related type use tax on toilet paper would it then bother you?
