Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was hundreds of miles off course, traveling in the opposite direction from its original destination and had stopped sending identifying transponder codes before it disappeared, a senior Malaysian Air Force official told CNN Tuesday.
If correct, these are ominous signs that could call into question whether someone in the cockpit might have deliberately steered the plane away from its intended destination, a former U.S. aviation investigator said.
"This kind of deviation in course is simply inexplicable," said Paul Goelz, former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board.
(snip) The Malaysian Air Force lost track of the plane over Pulau Perak, a tiny island in the Straits of Malacca -- many hundreds of miles from the usual flight path for aircraft traveling between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, the official said.

I don’t know about the fighter pilots, but the pilots on the 777 flight deck sure could have been.
If the fighter jets had to shoot the liner down, the Malay government is going to clam up like all get-out about it, and that’s looking to be like what’s going on.
There’s some speculation that your avionics division’s designs are now being analyzed in Tehran, along with the plane itself.
I highly doubt that. Range of flight, and technical capabilities of the Iranians. And I don’t think we have an Avionics Division. We make chips.
Malaysia would be looking for the black box and concrete proof that a suicide attack was underway before admitting to any shootdown - even if it takes months. If the story somehow comes out before they have proof the shootdown was necessary, the second-guessing is going to be overwhelming.
This thread smells of Infowars.
I hadn’t heard the debris reports today, but that should be in the news.
One things for sure, once we find out what happened, no matter how crazy, one of us can say “That’s what I said all along!”
Correct. In all regards.
I heard it last night on our local ABC network..said there was a large debris field located and they were going to check it out, never heard anything about it again
(We promised to solve this before bedtime)
Marmema, enlighten CL about the 22-man Freescale avionics group leaving Kuala Lampur for Beijing.
If that's the case, not admitting they shot it down doesn't seem to serve a purpose.
I think if the idea that hijackers blew up or damaged a plane is bad, the idea that a military shot it down is worse.
Passengers would know, if hijacked, they are already as good as dead.
Confessing military involvement in a deliberate civilian shootdown would be a very difficult thing for any government to do.
. . . . Ping to # 288.
For a month-long seminar.
True. :)
Please do, MarMema. If you already posted it, my apologies in advance. There have been a lot of threads.
This is the new normal. It used to be if you were hijacked, the worse that could happen would be you get stuck in Pittsburgh or El Paso a few hours. Now, you can die. 9/11 changed that.
Nothing from ABC; just this and others on Google:
What about all those passengers with handheld devices with GPS engaged. Do we think that every single one of them just tiurned off at the same time? Or that one of them didn’t try to sneak a “mayday” out?
