Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was hundreds of miles off course, traveling in the opposite direction from its original destination and had stopped sending identifying transponder codes before it disappeared, a senior Malaysian Air Force official told CNN Tuesday.
If correct, these are ominous signs that could call into question whether someone in the cockpit might have deliberately steered the plane away from its intended destination, a former U.S. aviation investigator said.
"This kind of deviation in course is simply inexplicable," said Paul Goelz, former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board.
(snip) The Malaysian Air Force lost track of the plane over Pulau Perak, a tiny island in the Straits of Malacca -- many hundreds of miles from the usual flight path for aircraft traveling between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, the official said.

Failed Somali piracy.
I don’t know exactly what they did. Corporate isn’t telling us a lot. I assumed, possibly incorrectly, they were managers for the manufacturing groups we have in KLM and Tianjin. Specialists like the ones you’re referring to would be in design centers, stateside like in Austin or Tempe, AZ.
That is outside the harbor, which would be bad.
But over a US city would be devastation both physically and psychologically.
All have warning signs attached for each buyer.
The new path would appear to take them over the northern part of Sumatra and straight in the direction of Diego Garcia.
Heck, I don’t even know for sure if we have folks like that. We’re mostly car guys these days.
There’s been some speculation on a couple threads that Freescale is building super secret stuff, which is pretty cool because that means I can order it from Digi-Key. ;)
Do you know if THE cell phone company investigated the ‘ping’, if there was one?
Not a far fetched theory
Check out the commercial aircraft runway on ‘Car Nicobar’. On that tiny little Island, even.
Not to mention insulation, coffee cups, oil, etc.
This isn't out in the middle of the ocean, it is in place with some of the highest ship traffic in the world. Not saying it didn't splash down, but if it did, there will be stuff floating.
Not sure. But, SE Asia does have very good cell service. Even in places where one wouldn’t think.
With the DG theory, the plane is shot down. With mostly Chinese on board.
If it landed in Somalia, satellites would have spotted it right away and Navy Seals have already taken it back. But if it went somewhere with less US military attention, maybe...
CIA head John Brennan mentioned pilot suicide. Oh wait. HE’S A CONVERT TO ISLAM AND IS MORE THAN EAGER TO COVER FOR TERRORISTS. When a pilot with over 200 on board downs the plane, it’s not suicide, IT’S MURDER FOR ALLAH.
Maybe not. The hijackers would have tried to fly as low as possible toward the target, a very risky maneuver with a large commercial aircraft, and might well have hit the water. Also, the passengers might have stormed the cockpit once it was clear they had been hijacked.
Maybe their destination was the Seychelles. Would knock off over 500 miles vs Mogadishu and be over lonelier water. But then, they'd have to deal with the Seychellians. The Seychelles are apparently a tourist trap. Piracy would be bad for that. Of course, either route passes within radar range of Diego Garcia, where the Great Satan maintains a base.
As far as the SEALS go, who knows? This might be another gig for them.
there is no cell phone signal in the middle of the ocean
