Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 was hundreds of miles off course, traveling in the opposite direction from its original destination and had stopped sending identifying transponder codes before it disappeared, a senior Malaysian Air Force official told CNN Tuesday.
If correct, these are ominous signs that could call into question whether someone in the cockpit might have deliberately steered the plane away from its intended destination, a former U.S. aviation investigator said.
"This kind of deviation in course is simply inexplicable," said Paul Goelz, former managing director of the National Transportation Safety Board.
(snip) The Malaysian Air Force lost track of the plane over Pulau Perak, a tiny island in the Straits of Malacca -- many hundreds of miles from the usual flight path for aircraft traveling between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing, the official said.

From what’s been published the vast majority of the passengers were Chinese. Something like 120 or so. There was something like 40 Malaysians aboard.
There should have been an explanation for this by now?
Easier to put your bomb in a standard shipping container, equipped with GPS, so that it knows when it's reached New York Harbor.
At the moment, it’s like “Lost.” Yes, Freescale had 20 people on the flight. That’s my company. I do have hope for them because they haven’t found wreckage, but I’m afraid that’s just because they are looking in the wrong place.
It is POSSIBLE the plane was highjacked remotely by computer hackers, and flown off course without the pilots ever suspecting a thing, until it started to land itself, and then they could not take it back from auto-pilot!
This mystery would have been very easy if the cell phone story were not complete BS.
What about reports of ringing cell phones but no answers?
Exactly. AND they LOVE making a show. Having no-one know where it is, or making it so they can’t find it until a week later or so, kind of loses the “impact” of such action, doesn’t it?
This is NOT Moslem MO.
Sorry bro. Prayers continue. Please don’t take offense at my graveyard humor. I do this all the time.
So, this may just be a publicity score for the Somali pirates? Marmema and I were talking about those two Seals who didn’t do drugs dying on that ship in Seychelles two weeks ago of heroin overdoses. You supposed they intercepted this plot and were investigating it?
The oil slick turned out not to be aviation fuel, and the debris was some kind of construction waste or such.
If the reports of ringing cell phones are accurate, there is a tower somewhere that knows where they are.
Wow, go to Google maps and check out the airport on the tiny little island of ‘Car Nicobar’.. That could easily accommodate a 777 landing. I’m shocked this little island has a major airport. It’s located directly west of where the aircraft had last diverted direction to.
Thanks. Hadn’t heard that. This is getting weird.
Yeah, that’s the only province in Indonesia that is sufficiently fundamentalist Islam that there is an outside chance a landing might not be reported. Now I’m a conspiracy wacko like everyone else grasping for explanations.
These 20 were electronic warfare semiconductor specialists? Or some of them?
I know, and I usually laugh, but this was a little different. Not knowing what’s become of them is tough. I have no idea what it’s like at work because I haven’t been there since Friday (Fighting a nasty cold). These coworkers are Malaysia- and China-based, so I doubt I know them personally.
Some phones/tablets are waterproof, impact-resistant and could survive a crash. A satellite phone is the best way to establish connection over ocean flight.
