The federal government has lost track of tens of thousands of foreign students who came to the U.S. to study and then took jobs, often in violation of the terms of their visas, according to a new internal audit.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement doesnt even consistently collect information or have the tools to monitor all of the foreign students who take part in the optional practical training (OPT) program, the Government Accountability Office said in a new report released late Friday.
The problems with OPT are extensive and serious. The report not only calls into question the departments oversight of the program, but also whether such lack of oversight is a serious national security risk, Sen. Charles E. Grassley, the Iowa Republican who released the report, said in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.
Officials who run the Student and Exchange Visitor Program have deemed OPT to be a low-risk program, but the new findings suggest that may be wrong.
Immigration agents told investigators they view the program as a gateway to illegal immigration, since students who are approved are allowed to work not just during their time in school, but also for up to 29 months after they complete their studies.

It's widely known how seriously they take their responsibilities.
How could they get jobs, if the companies were doing their I9. Everywhere I have worked in the past 25 years, I’ve had to go through the “prove you are a citizen” thing.
Just like the 9/11 hijackers who came here to go to airline pilot school
yep.
I’m not sure what proof is required these days, but I suspect you can have just about any type of documentation manufactured for a fee.
It’s all part of the national suicide effort a.k.a hope and change.
Not all of these “students” are students.
In other words, they lost track of the next Bari Soebarkah.
Some of those missing will become US Senators and Presidents with zero forms of valid ID.
For the list.
The grammar in the headline... The Washington Times? Really?
Good grief.
Oh I understand that. I work with photoshop all day, so I appreciate what it takes to create documents.
But, and this is a serious question to anyone who knows—what happens when they use a SSN that is not accurate? Does it get kicked back? How much effort do they have to go through to get it straightened out. Or, by doing the first I9 effort, do they just wait for it to be corrected?
I wanna think this has more to do with being lazy than anything else.
That’s why we do I9 lookups
I found one. He's in the offices of the Washington Times writing headlines.
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
I think I read this same headline last year, the year before that and.......
Our politicians are filing us at every level. Someday they will be held to account.
