It’s global warming, I tell ya!
Oh nose! The Man Made Global Warming is causing more water in the oceans which is putting stress on the Earth’s crust. Mother Earth is reacting with earth quakes.
/sarc.
That’s earthquake country because a bunch of geologically significant features meet just off shore. The village of Samoa is located on a strip of land on the ocean side of Humboldt Bay across from Eureka. The tallest land around there is a couple of sand dunes, about 20 feet high. Two decades ago, they were required to complete a government mandated Tsunami plan. The finished plan read something along the line of, “in event of Tsunami, run! run!”
“Pray” would probably have gotten them in trouble with the ACLU.
Interesting, little 1.9 quake a few hours later in Soledad, 300+ miles south, but also on the San Andreas fault. And another 1.2 on the south end of the fault just now. Looks like there’s some readjusting going on.
I know nothing about the geological stuff that goes on, but if it is possible to have small adjustments, over big adjustments, I will take that. I was there for the 89 quake that hit the Bay Area. It scared the day lights out of me. I don't want to feel that again.
I was five miles from the center of the Northridge quake in ‘94. I agree completely.
I am sure your experience was worse than mine. You were closer than I was, but I remember Northridge too
Earthquakes are scarey as he** to me.
I was in the one in SF during the world series.
Horrible
I was there, too. Hard to believe that it was almost 25 years ago!
From birth I spent most of my life just south of San Francisco, back when it was Reagan Country. Earthquakes are much better than annual tornadoes, and the small ones are almost fun. If you would like a good description of the ‘89 quake, here it is; we were in the furnished basement waiting for the game to start. As the first waves began, we moved to the doorway. I was holding on to the door frame when the major wave hit. The door frame (the house) leaped out of my hand grip. I’ll never forget it.
We were practically neighbors, then. I was living in San Mateo at the time, but I was at work in Redwood Shores when the thing hit.
Without earthquakes and OTHER types of geological processes, we have a DEAD planet. Just be smart and don’t live in an earthquake prone area. :)
Everything on earth and in space can and will kill us stay alert.
I was in the Fairfield/Vacaville area, just sitting down to watch the Giant/As game. The first thing that happened, the TV screen went blank. About 5 seconds later, the house started to shake, not nearly like it did in SF, but I did feel it.
I’ve been around them my whole life, but 94 was my first biggie. There’s that first wave that bounces you a bit, then the shaking action hits. The beginnings of that first wave feel the same to me for a 3 as they did for the 7, so I get this little momentary adrenaline rush for even a tiny one these days. Funny how that works...
