Rand Paul wins 2014 CPAC straw poll, Ted Cruz finishes a distant second
The Associated Press ^ | 03-08-2014 | Stephen Dinan

Sen. Rand Paul demolished his competition in the 2014 Washington Times/CPAC presidential preference straw poll on Saturday, winning 31 percent of the vote -- nearly three times the total of second-place Sen. Ted Cruz.

Mr. Cruz's 11 percent was still a big improvement for the freshman senator, who won just 4 percent in last year's straw poll. Neurosurgeon Ben Carson was third with 9 percent and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was fourth with 8 percent in results that signal growing discontent with the GOP establishment in Washington.

Indeed, CPAC voters now have an unfavorable view of Republicans in Congress, with 51 percent saying they disapprove of the job the GOP is doing on Capitol Hill. Just last year the GOP had a 54 percent approval rating, and in 2012 they held a 70 percent approval rating.

"Yes, old man Ron Paul won many a CPAC straw poll. I was there in 2009 and he won that year. I voted for Palin."

Every year, with perfect predictability, the nuts turned out for Ron.

So is a true conservative actually a libertarian with morals?

A conservative is just a conservative, he doesn't adopt a different name that means 'anti-conservative'.

Paul is not a conservative

I can live with the Cruz/Paul (Paul/Cruz) combination. We pretty much know where Paul is at. Unlike that backstabber PaulRyan, who's with us on no issues....but they snuck him by us as a conservative. Rand Paul is good about individual freedom from government overreach, wanting to get rid of the Federal Reserve, states rights, and not fighting wars we have no business being in. Immigration is his Achilles Heel, but he's come over toward sanity on that issue, and the Chamber of Commerce doesn't own him. Having a dad who served all of those years in the HOR, he's not overly impressed by being part of the DC crowd. His libertarian views aren't out of sync with our wanting a constitutional government.

If it's not that combination, the ticket will either have a RINO or be painted by the dems as extremely conservative.

Think about it. Cruz/Paul keep up this tag team of being first and second, it's much, much better than any other nominees we'd get. Together, they overwhelm the status quo.

Rand Paul, another loser. Must be a lot of fools in CPAC.

So what is the difference between a conservative and a libertarian? I am curious as I have had numerous discussions with my boss about this. I say a conservative is a libertarian with a Bible.

I don’t care what his freaking label is. You’re confused if you think Paul is an internationalist. He’s just the opposite - he’s an isolationist. Although I don’t agree with isolationism, Paul is the most ardent active potential candidate (Palin isn’t one so far) that actually believes in cutting government and taxes. Big government is by far the greatest threat to our lives and well being. Nobody’s going to be everything every body wants and the Left will do everything to split the Right on these other peripheral issues. The ONE THING the Left does NOT want is to see the Right unified and rallying around a platform and a candidate that puts cutting government and taxes head and shoulders above all other issues. So fat the Left is succeeding.

There’s always a mass presence of Paul-heads at cpac. I went during the last presidential race and enjoyed talking to all the college age Ron Paul voters there. I am surprised Cruz didn’t get closer overall though.

I wont vote for a ticket with a Libertarian on it period. Libertarians are NOT Conservatives. I have thought about it over and over in the past presidential election and have concluded that the only way to eventually elect Conservatives is if Conservatives only vote for Conservatives.

Voting for Libertarians or the latest flavor of the GOPe will not produce a Conservative result...

Same here. And as much as people might hate to face it, he’s right on a great many things.

After 15 years of big government statism it’s great to see Freedom and Liberty making a long overdue return. Go Rand.

Libertarians claim to accept the small government, and economic goals of conservatives, but they support the leftist agenda, which of course, makes conservatism and small government impossible, since America votes for it’s laws and government and doped up welfare people and immigrants do not vote to end welfare.

Here is the leftists agenda hidden behind the Libertarian Party curtain.

Libertarian Party Platform:

Throw open the borders completely; only a rare individual (terrorist, disease carrier etc.) can be kept from freedom of movement through “political boundaries”.

Homosexuals; total freedom in the military, gay marriage, adoption, child custody and everything else.

Abortion; zero restrictions or impediments.

Pornography; no restraint, no restrictions.

Drugs; Meth, Heroin, Crack, and anything new that science can come up with, zero restrictions.

Advertising those drugs, prostitution, and pornography; zero restrictions.

Military Strength; minimal capabilities.

I like Carson a lot but, sadly, Obama probably has ruined the chances of any black man to win the presidency for at least the next 50 years.

I’d be happy with Paul, Cruz and/or Palin for Pres./VP.

If true, very scary.

Who is so stupid to believe that a country can be run without morals? That would only work if everyone was in agreement to following God.

I like Rand Paul but as a Senator. I don’t see him as presidential material.
