Could you give up the internet for Lent - or even for good?
Following various reports about companies stealing information and complaints about oversharing on social media, a web hosting firm has created a nine-step guide on how to disappear from the web completely.
It includes deactivating accounts, removing links from search results and how to remove yourself from various lists - and for people who'd rather just stay hidden than disappear, the guide also gives tips on how to use the internet anonymously.
'Social media has made everyones life an open book - one thats open a bit too far in some cases.
For [people] concerned about their personal information potentially costing them jobs and relationships, the decision to pull the plug is an increasingly attractive one,' said London-based WhoIsHostingThis (WIHT).
While it might seem impossible to keep your private life private, the truth is you can disappear online with a little effort and dedication.'

Whew!
I’m WAAAY ahead!
Never signed up for FB or Twitter...
And I STILL need to reduce my FR time by 50%.
Thank you for posting this. I’m in the midst of becoming “invisible” and this will be a good checklist to evaluate my efforts.

Just being on FR has you at the top of the Homeland Security list. I mean, how could it not?
So to me nothing else even matters in terms of worrying.
I’m on all those places, but mainly in order to keep someone from using my DoughtyOne identity there.
I check in from time to time, but man I couldn’t live my life the way folks using those forums do.
LinkedIn may have a business networking benefit. Other than that, the folks who participate on those forums seem to have a psychological need to reach out beyond the healthy.
“Oh, I just came back from the bathroom. Boy do I feel better.”

Social media didn’t make people’s lives an open book, PEOPLE did that. If you don’t want too much stuff shared then don’t. You can be on facebook and twitter and NOT post every thought and every meal.
My point was that if somebody on FR is worried about the govt watching them, it's way too late.

The only problem with disappearing from the internet is the same problem everyone who gives their OPUS at FreeRepuiblic runs into.
YOU HAVE TO STAY OFF THE INTERNET AND QUIT POSTING FOR IT TO WORK!

To remove yourself from Intelius, you either have to pay them $20/yr or send them your driver’s license. Uh huh, sure. They own your azz and there’s nothing much you can do about it.

Yeh, sorta like the Atkins diet—hard to maintain.
Step one: don’t reply.
