Louis Maraldi, 37, from Cesena, was named as one of the passengers on board the plane.
However, reports in Italy have confirmed that he was NOT on board and that he had reported his passport stolen last August.

Passenger manifest
It’s just wild-assed guess, but I’d bet such is not uncommon on international flights.
Well, the thief got justice it seems.
Why isn’t a lost passport cancelled (in the system)?
He wasn’t necessarily the person who stole it. My guess is, he wasn’t.
It is quite unusual that there would be no distress call, especially when the plane was cruising at altitude. Because of this, I immediately thought terrorist act. A lot of muzzies in that part of the world.
A lot of muzzies everywhere and it only takes one.
You miss the point. The thief could be the perp.
—Because of this, I immediately thought terrorist act.
Yup
Catastrophic Failure, Abrupt Loss of Cabin Integrity
I thought the same thing. If it had been a mechanical malfunction, there would have been some time for the crew to react and send a distress signal.
“It is quite unusual that there would be no distress call, especially when the plane was cruising at altitude. Because of this, I immediately thought terrorist act.”
Me too. And I immediately thought about the knife attacks in the train station in China last week, reportedly perpetrated by Uyghurs.
Hope his family didn’t see the passenger manifest.
Talk about a shock..only to find out he was alive in Italy.
I was thinking the same.
I am going with what happened on the Air France 447 flight. Inexperience, questionable weather and instrumentation problems. By the time they figured out what was going on they couldn’t recover the aircraft.
...and there would have been things floating in the water if it was a mechanical failure.

It’s not the best idea in the world to fly in a commercial flight where the pilot and copilot have MUSLIM names.
Im surprised that no one has yet taken ..”credit” for the deed, if in fact it was a matter of terrorist mayhem and destruction.
Not saying your suspicions are wrong, but there were no distress calls from that Air France flight that went down in the Atlantic and that was pilot error.
The question back then was "isn't terrorism even worse if we're not sure what is and is not terrorism"? It's the uncertainty about the inherent safety of things that'll bring us to our knees.
I bring this up because it's the not knowing that's even worse than is having an enemy to blame.
