Millennial generation less religious, more liberal than older ones

WASHINGTON -- Members of the huge millennial generation are less religious, less likely to call themselves “patriotic” and significantly more‎ liberal than older generations, new research shows.

Although adults aged 18-33 are much more likely to call themselves political independents than their elders are, they are also far more likely to vote Democratic. Their views favoring activist government, as well as their stands on social issues such as gay rights, reinforce that voting behavior, an extensive study by the Pew Research Center shows.

All the 34-40 y/o in my family are STILL big gov, pro gay, liberals who believe religion is oppressive. They are all college graduates, parents, home owners with good jobs who live in the suburbs. In the past these types would have grown up, become more conservative and been the foundation of a center right country. Ain’t happening anymore. They have been totally sold on the liberal vision and nothing in their lives changes that. They are just waiting for us old people, who screwed up their world, to die off so the country can get straightened out. Just to add to the embarrassment 3 of them are vegans and drive Priuses.

Enjoy it while you can, this great country is on life support.

Please go back to coordinating nap time. The Boomers destroyed the world crap is getting old. Boomers gave you the PC, cellphones, iwhatever’s. I’m guessing they raised you, fed you, helped pay for your education and are or will be providing you with baby sitting services. As a group Boomers are well educated, hard working, center right people. Way too many your age have bought the liberal line that all Boomers were at Woodstock, moved to Haight- Ashbury, lived in communes and spent their time smoking dope. I’m 62 years old and know not one person in my Boomer age group that fits that liberal/Hollywood stereotype. Get over it.

Political correctness rules the educational roost from kindergarten through college. Is it any wonder these kids have no moral values except “tolerance” for any evil that comes their way?

after 16 years of obama and hillary, these millenials might change. but by then any liberal policy change might be irreversable.

I think I’m part of the ‘millennials’? (Just about 25.)
Religious? Not really at all. I’m more of an engineer :p
Patriotic? Sure! 3/124 CAV :)
Political independent? Conservative.
Marriage? Not the government.
Marijuana? Not the government.
Abortion? Murder.

For the most part, there’s no reason for the government to be involved in most things. Most people shouldn’t see the federal government at all in their daily lives. Or weekly. Or monthly.

“Well, who is teaching them conservative philosophies”

What you would call “conservative philosophies” I would call common sense, the difference between right and wrong, self-reliance and personal integrity. These should be learned from their parents and their faith. Studies show that children who grow up in one parent, nonreligious homes are far more likely to believe the liberal propaganda that is repeated over and over again by the MSM, the entertainment industry and the government.

Children who grow up in two parent, religious families are more likely to believe in traditional values.

There has probably not been a generation born since Lee's surrender at Appomattox that has not been to the left of the previous generation. The Progressive and Populist movements were populated with Civil War veterans and their children. By 1930, the Episcopal, Northern Methodist, and Northern Presbyterian churches were controlled at the denominational and seminary level by modernists. The Ivy League colleges suffered a similar fate. God and Man at Yale, William Buckley's denunciation of liberalism at his alma mater, was written over 60 years ago.

The struggle between the forces of tradition and decency and those of deconstruction and immorality is a very old one. Conservatives are in effect living from paycheck (Reagan) to paycheck (the GOP sweep in the midterms of 1994) to paycheck (a similar sweep in the 2010 midterms). The Left looks in terms of decades and even centuries. Karl Marx talked about the historical process of centuries. Atheists and agnostics have no afterlife to look forward to; their legacy is in transforming society away from tradition and the Christian faith.

If you are to win a war, you have to have at least two and usually three of the following: a better overall plan, superior leadership, more men, and better equipment. The South had only one of these four (better leadership) and lost the Civil War. Germany only had one (better equipment) on a consistent basis (the German general staff and field command were very good, but the Kaiser and Hitler not so much) and lost both World Wars. At this point, conservatives do not clearly have at least one of these factors in their favor.

Generations don’t change much, ageing and responsibility help people mature, but it doesn’t make a generation of 66% Obama voters into boomers for instance.

The boomers you attacked, voted 52% for Nixon, fought the Vietnam war as volunteers and produced almost 9.5 million veterans, and were the most supportive age group of the Vietnam war.

I wonder where you get your ideas about marriage, from Islam?

Muslims want polygamy to be legal, and Thomas Jefferson bought a marriage license.

That generation I attached does include my parents and they agree with me believe it or not. They spit on the veterans coming home from the war, Kent State, abortions beyond belief, etc. Finally now that Generation X (I will be honest and say that I am from this incredible generation) has finally began to lower abortion rates, actually getting them out of states in some cases, going to church more, etc.

"Always the case. The young are always more liberal and less religious until they get married, have children and get a good job and they find out that their lofty liberal ideas are not realistic."

The problem with this generation is that if they are educated and ambitious, they aren't interested in getting married or having children, or if they are, they're delaying both until their mid-30's or later. Then there's a large group of functionally illiterate who have lots of kids, but don't pay for them, and then don't get married so they won't have to start paying for their own kids. The number that even *want* to get married and have children is dwindling, and of those that want to, many can't find partners, and many more can't make it work long enough to launch their first child to college with marriage intact.

The very thing that in generations past would help youths evolve from idealistic, naive, and liberal to realistic, wise, and conservative, are the very things that they're NOT doing--because they've been told by those on the left that marriage, parenthood, and religion are bad things that will cramp their style and ruin their lives, and are things to be avoided. We've already lost, but most of us will be dead before the full repercussions come to light.

You might call them common sense, and perhaps at a time in this country’s history they were common sense, but today I would call them exceptionally rare sense.

I would also say that two parent religious families are also very rare, and very necessary in producing the human resources needed in continuing this country’s traditions.

That institution has been attacked purposely and effectively for that very reason.

I personally do not follow any religion, although I am no atheist and believe in Jesus Christ, but I believe religion is extremely important in families and in the raising of children.

If I did have a child, it would without a doubt be in a two person family that actively participated in religion, even though I personally may not want to do that. Religion has a very important role in establishing morality and building belief systems in young people.

Having raised four children I agree totally. Being a dad is a great experience.

Good luck.
