Staples to shut 225 stores in North America as sales fall
Yahoo Finance ^

(Reuters) - Staples Inc (SPLS), the largest U.S. office supplies retailer, forecast a fall in current-quarter sales as it loses customers to mass market chains and e-retailers, and the company said it would close up to 225 stores in North America by 2015.

Staples' shares fell 9 percent before the bell, after the company also posted lower-than-expected fourth-quarter results and forecast current-quarter profit below analysts' estimates.

The company operates 1,515 stores in the United States and 331 stores in Canada.

With reference to your post #61, what you say is true, stores have always failed throughout the years of the Republic. What I should have said, but didn’t—laziness crept in—is that this is but an indication of the continuing failure of our economy and is a leading indicator of the worst to come, what with other problems, key of which is the impact of Obamacare, which can be directly linked to some of these failures (Cabela’s stands out). Other indicators are the continuing rises of unemployment (hidden neatly by the Administration by excluding the huge numbers of the people who have given up looking for work) and the impact of the EPA’s and other agencies’ regulations (the closings of coal mines, for example).

All the evidence is out there but the low-information voter does not care or does not have the capability of caring what’s happening to the USA’s economy.

All of the shopping centers around here have empty stores that aren’t getting filled by new businesses.

I remember the same thing happening under Reagan, but the economy picked back up after a couple years. This obama economy stinks.

Two giant Barnes & Noble stores just shut down in my area. Borders went under several years ago.

They might have had a chance if they offered good discounts. On Amazon, you can always find a book discounted, or used, or in digital form.

I like Staples but they over expanded. The world already had more office stores than it needed then all of a sudden Staples doubled the count.

Think of this as a lagging indicator of the economy.

If small businesses were really doing well, then there would be a demand for office supplies. The fact that Staples has to close stores indicates that the number of small business offices needing supplies is reducing.

I asked one which group had controlled Congress for a long, long time. Her answer? John Boehner and the Republicans. When I pointed out to her that it was Harry Reid (and Pelosi) and the Democrats, even before Obama, she didn’t see a problem.

In her defense, neither party has "controlled Congress for a long, long time" in a long, long time.

Even a significant portion of the idiot Obama voters have to be affected to a degree
= = = = = = = = = =
One wonders, though, whether many of them have the insight to know what’s causing their troubles
= = = = = = = = = = =

As to both remarks, if you aren’t working or on the dole or ‘work’ for the Government this kind of ‘it doesn’t make any difference to me, I am not bothered by it’ mentality sets in.

On a snow day the other day (IT ACTUALLY SNOWED)’they’ were interviewing people who were upset that they had a day off and the INCONSIDERATE stores and some malls weren’t open.

For all the ‘good’ it would do, maybe someone should tell the ‘dissenters’

“YOU don’t have the day off to go shopping, you have the day off so the streets can get plowed AND since the schools close if snow is forecast, you will be able to be home with your kids.”

Just a thought, but with even the Govt now shutting down for a dusting OR a ‘severe forecast’, after say 4 or 5 snow days this year, it should have been declared that maybe ‘Presidents Day’ wasn’t a holiday, to make up for the lost time.
Talk about screaming...

Notice as the Govt kept ‘adding’ PAID Holidays, private business started ignoring them, maybe ‘trading’ the day after Thanksgiving or if Christmas on Tuesday or Thursday giving Mon or Fri off.
Either of those days off are somewhat ‘unproductive anyway- as a lot of people just extend their weekend to accommodate the Holiday.

Since the Govt is broke and layoffs ‘hurt the economy in General’ why not just start with NO paid holidays for a year or so.

Go back to the ‘old theory’ when I went into the ‘work force’ - If you work you get paid.
Thanksgiving was a day off and you just didn’t get paid.
Only real difference was salaried people didn’t get ‘docked’ but then again, salaried people didn’t have 40 hr weeks either - more like 60, but you were allowed to ‘winter in’ BUT ‘they’ expected you to show your face “In case something had to be done”.

Her feet were freezing as she would wait for the bus on the way to and from work.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = =
s??
Guess she would have walked to work to keep her feet warm but it is UPHILL both ways?

I used to tell mine (when I had one) that when it snowed and she had to walk to the bus stop to not wake me when she got up. I would usually sleep in and would have her start my 4 wheel drive on her way out.
Every once in awhile I would even pass her bus (I had an office a block or so away from where she worked).
When I got her a car I told here that if it was bad enough for snow tires, she didn’t need to be out in it.

Can’t figure out why that marriage ‘went south’. s/s

I was at Staples and noted the Samsung Galaxy Note 8” was $299 elsewhere (including Bestbuy) but at Staples it was $349.00. For that extra $50 I can but several accessories.

Staples is helping kill itself. It has reduced the amount and variety of bona fide office supplies from each section of their stores and has replaced them with an entire section of heavily marked-up household cleaning supplies, coffee filters, snacks, etc.

What moron made this decision? Individuals and small businesses will NOT buy heavily marked up cleaning supplies and sundries at Staples. They will go next door to a retail store to save money. Or they will go down the block to Sam's Club or Costco to buy the items in bulk to save even more money.

I regularly shopped at Staples for convenience purchases of unique office supplies I immediately needed that day. Now those items are no longer on the shelves at Staples. Their sales clerks tell me that I can still buy those same unique items from Staples online, but I really don't want to wait or pay for shipping. And if I'm going to now be forced to purchase these items online in advance of need, why wouldn't I just order it directly online from the manufacturer or wholesaler?

Stupid, stupid, stupid sales strategy!!!

It reeks of a company that knows its end is near.

No, Staples is Anti Christmas, Anti Conservative, Anti Freedom. Do a search...I believe “we the people” spoke with our money and went else wear. I remember writing to them about their Anti-Christmas stance and they made no excuses, they wanted nothing to do with it except take our money. Bye bye Staples, lets see if you change your stance this Christmas!

Even the dollar stores don’t do so well around here. The older one here in town cut back to half the size it was a few years ago
