Federal wildlife officials are setting aside nearly 1,200 square miles in the American Southwest as critical habitat for the jaguar... Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise counties in Arizona and Hidalgo County in New Mexico

...

The critical designation means anyone developing federal land in the area needs to consult the service to ensure it will not hurt the jaguar’s habitat

There has never been a shred of evidence that jaguars live/breed here so this is pure nonsense. On rare occasions jaguars have been seen in this area, they come up out of the mountains in Mexico. One used to be seen about once every 20 years or so until it became a useful topic to use to set aside land. Now it seems they are seen everywhere around here all the time. That is not true, there are photos of one or two taken by Warner Glenn who lives in part of the area to be protected over a period of several years. Other reports are just various people claiming they saw one, no evidence. I am not buying the idea that this should be a sanctuary of some sort.

In the top photo he's holding S&W Registered Magnum # 10 which was presented to him by Daniel Wesson.

So that would mean it was the tenth .357 magnum revolver S&W made like the one below? Beautiful revolver, but then again it was practically hand made.

Wonder who has it now. Siemel spent his last years in Philadelphia. Nice to hope it ended up with a hunter equal to Siemel instead of becoming a safe queen.

It was in his wife’s posession following his death. It is either in the posession of the family, or a collector, as she was aware it had a pedigree.

The Registered Magnum was a made to order gun only, with, I believe ~5000 made before production ceased due to WWII. After the war it was made a production item (pre-27) with, over the years a 3.5" (FBI issue favorite), 4", 5", 6", and 8 3/8".

This one belonged to Patton.

The Registered Magnum was a made to order gun only...

Wasn’t it a custom among gunsmiths to make presentation models of the first ten or so, some elaborately engraved and otherwise tarted up for presidents and other prominent folk?

The first one went to J.Edgar Hoover (he liked to accessorize). Daniel Wesson liked presenting handguns to notable hunters and shooters. Several were presented to Ed McGivern the famous exhibition shooter. Most were purchased by persons who wanted the best and in many instances, needed it.

I didn't know jaguars had ever lived in any part of what is now the USA.

When do we start importing lions and tigers? How about rhinoceros?

I didn't know jaguars had ever lived in any part of what is now the USA.

They are in the historical record. Up until around 1900, regular sightings in far southern Arizona and southern New Mexico -- the areas now being preserved -- and also in the Big Bend area of Texas.

They began showing up again, via trip wire photography, about 20 years ago. Haven't been spotted in the Big Bend yet, though.

Were native. We had the good sense to kill off all the predators in America. But we forgot Democrats. We’ll regret that decision forever.
