Opening a door to hedge his political bets, Sen. Rand Paul has asked the leader of the Kentucky Senate for legislation to ensure that Mr. Paul can run both for the White House and for re-election to the U.S. Senate in 2016, The Washington Times has learned.
Yes, I am working on clarifying an ambiguous state law that Rand Paul believes is unconstitutional if it is interpreted to bar running for re-election to the Senate and for president at the same time, Kentucky Senate Majority Leader Damon Thayer told The Times on Monday.
The purpose of the bill will be to make clear that Rand Paul or anyone in a similar situation in Kentucky can run for both offices in the same year, Mr. Thayer explained. If things go Mr. Pauls way, he could win the GOP presidential nomination, then run in the fall 2016 general election for the presidency and to retain his U.S. Senate seat. If he wins the presidency and the Senate re-election bid, he would relinquish his Senate seat.
If he loses the presidential election but wins the Senate re-election race, he would become a second-term U.S. senator from Kentucky.
Since winning his election in 2010, Mr. Paul has argued for creating term limits so members of Congress could serve a maximum of 12 years in each chamber.
Mr. Paul and his office did not immediately respond to requests for comment Monday. But in a recent C-SPAN Newsmakers program, Mr. Paul said he and his team were looking at the possibility of running for the Senate and the White House simultaneously.
We just havent come to a conclusion yet, he said at the time.

All they do is raise money after elected. Challengers should be given more time to raise money.
Can you think of a more effective way to show a lack of confidence in yourself!!?
Im a long shot for Prez so Id better hedge my bets so I can at least stay in elected office.

My take as well. Also...I find it annoying that these pol’s run for an office and then quit before their term is up...costing the states lots of extra $$$ to run special elections.
Get in or get out. I wouldn’t want to waste my vote on some pol who is either selfish (taking a spot of another conservative) or a jelly belly who has no faith he/she will get elected to the ‘higher’ office.
Well..also...no freaking way I’m going to vote for Rand...but that’s beside the point. :)
A politician who wants his cake and eat it, too. Color me shocked...zzzzz.
Seriously, if I made it to the Senate, I wouldn’t want any other gig. All that power and all those perksand hundreds of other people in both houses to blame your failures on. Just another face in the crowd. Who happens to be a sitting Senator.
It’s no wonder that McCain fought harder to keep his Senate seat than he did for the White House. Bet ol’ Hillary is wishing for those halcyon, carefree days of yore as the junior Senator from New York!
The horses don’t look too thrilled, either.
Shamnesty Paul is a bridge to nowhere.
(((
Good one.
Is that you, Karl Tokyo Rove?
DO NOT TRUST RAND PAUL!
***
Needs repeating.
They want my vote, nominate a conservative who understands whats going on.
***
Ditto.
Same here. I will write in Sarah Palin or Ted Cruz.
Done with picking the lesser of two evils.
Oh, well. My vote for Romney was my last RINO vote.
While I generally agree that we need term limits (and 12 years is about right), a large part of our problem is the 4th branch of government, the Bureaucracy. It is difficult for a newbie elected official to prevail in any meaningful way against entrenched member of the Bureaucracy.
We need a better solution there, too.
“Just nominate a CONSERVATIVE”
Does that sound like Rove, you clown?
Paul is going after NSA and complaining about the Patriot Act yet he endorsed McConnell? McConnell will be to Rand Paul what Arlen Spector was to Santorum.
“AND another big issue with Libertarians is NSA...In August 2007 McConnell introduced the Protect America Act of 2007, which allowed the National Security Agency to monitor telephone and electronic communications of suspected terrorists outside the United States without obtaining a warrant.” Rand is playing politics to win and his endorsement of Hagel, Kerry, McConnell send up red flags.
I was making a joke. Sorry if I offended you.
oh...not offended...
Your post was of a type I frequently receive here on FR.
Some folks here believe “Take my ball and go home” is an effective political strategy that has the potential for changing the hearts and minds of the GOPe.
That’s why I thought you were serious.
Some fail to recognize there is a time to fight and a time to stop the bleeding, lest the patient die on the table.
Well, I have cast my last vote for someone I know to be a RINO.
Is RINO somebody that has an (R) behind their name, but doesn’t meet your 20 item checklist of what it means to be “Conservative”?
I do not know what I have said to make you claim that I have 20 items on my checklist.
The list is much shorter. My candidate can disagree with me about many issues, but I demand a candidate who demonstrates a belief in and a willingness to defend or uphold:
1) the Bill of Rights
2) the sovereignty of the USA
My point #2, of necessity eliminates from consideration any candidate who supports amnesty for illegal aliens and/or any candidate who does not have a plan to secure our borders.
Perfect!
Some clown in PA is running in the rat primaries for CD 4 AND CD 11.
