A humanist advocacy group has filed a federal lawsuit to remove a cross-shaped World War I memorial in Prince George's County, alleging the display violates the First Amendment.
The American Humanist Association says it does not object to the fact that the Bladensburg Cross memorializes soldiers, but rather the placement of the Christian symbol on property owned by a government agency, The Daily Record reported.
"We are certainly recommending coming up with a monument inclusive of all religious groups," said Monica Miller, a lawyer with the association's Appignani Humanist Legal Center.
In 2012, the group sent a letter to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission demanding that the cross be removed from the war memorial. The group said it would have no objection if the cross was on private land, MyFoxDC.com reported.
According to the report, the lawsuit names as plaintiffs two local American Humanist Association members and a third individual -- each of whom had "unwelcome contact" with the monument.
Steven Lowe, a plaintiff from Washington, said was "shocked" when he first saw the cross and is "upset" whenever he passes it, according to the complaint obtained by the newspaper.

A lot of name calling regarding atheists here on this site. I am an atheist; most atheists are not bigots, mainly libertarians. I have found many of the bigoted anti- Christian atheists to be secular Christians and Jews.
Anti-Cross ping — now in Maryland

Well Ms. Miller I suggest you pay a visit to Arlington national Cemetery or FT Indiantown Gap National Cemetery where my father is buried or any other National cemetery. 98% of the tombstones /plaques bear the Christian Cross. Most of the remainder bear the Jewish star and a handful bear nothing or something only meaningful to the person buried under it. So shut up and leave us alone.

Makes no difference what land it is on. Those soldiers earned that right PERIOD....................
Done in Convention by the Unanimous Consent of the States present the Seventeenth Day of September in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty seven and of the Independence of the United States of America the Twelfth. In Witness whereof We have hereunto subscribed our Names.Even if that is not taken as indicative that all of the Framers were christians, it clearly was not assumed by the Framers that the Constitution would have been easier to get ratified by the states if that language were left out. As clearly it could have been - and, if the infamous three-vote attempt by the rank and file at the Democratic convention to shout down an expression of respect for God in 2012 is taken as illustrative, certainly would have been, by a group of modern-day Democrats.I find it difficult to visualize Vladimir Lenin putting "in the Year of our Lord" in a fundamental document when he could benchmark a date to the glorious revolution" instead. Consider, the Soviets promoted the idea of changing the length of the week from seven days, with the obvious intent of desynchronizing the secular calendar from the religious one, and ultimately deinstitutionalizing the latter.
Surely, there must be private property adjacent to the govt property that would be willing to showcase the memorial in an in your face move?
Heaven forbid that those symbol sensitive folks come to my part of Kansas, for we have hundreds of T shaped objects lining many of out roads and highways. Many of them are on public lands. We call them power poles, but maybe they are really Christian cross symbols. Horrors of horrors for not even one of them is crescent shaped! We also have a slew of t shaped symbols in our books and on road side billboards. We call them the letter T but they are really Christian crosses disguised as letters, especially troublesome is that lower case t. In Kansas those poor folks would be constantly sick. We need to get rid of these hateful symbols! (Sarcasm tag)
Also home to one of the oldest taverns on the East Coast, until a few years ago, when it was changed to a real estate office. I guess it’s some kind of county park office now.

I used to live just up the road in Hyattsville. Every year, 1812 re-enactors gather on the lawn of Riverdale Mansion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riversdale_(Riverdale_Park,_Maryland)) to celebrate the rout of US force at skirmish there.
I hope someone will defend Peace Cross against these anti-Christians.

Pretty much.
Mr. Buchanan lived briefly next door to my wife's family when she was young. Apparently, he and his wife had fallen on tough times, and were renting the basement of the neighbor's house in Bladensburg. He was going to get out of the music business, and he was attending barber school.
But around 9 months into barber school, he got signed to a record deal, and that was that.

And I’m upset whenever I see that mosque not 30 mi from this site, or the new one 2mi from my childhood home (still 10 min from me). Which is no more than an hour from there.
So, I should sue because I’m offended by this Moslem invasion of symbols.
If Christians can have no crosses on govt property, then Humanists can have no humans on govt property either. So there!
No humans... my cat would be copacetic with that. Until feeding time.
Oh yeah, and Atheists can have no not-God on govt property either.
Howdy, HTRN!
