~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Naval Air Station Meridian, Mississippi Just 15 miles northeast of downtown Meridian lies Naval Air Station Meridian jet training facility. NAS Meridian hosts Training Wing One and training squadrons VT-7 and VT-9. VT-7 operates the T-45 (Goshawk) while VT-9 flies the venerable T2-C Buckeye. The main base of NAS Meridian occupies more than 8,000 acres, with an additional 4,000 acres at Joe Williams Field and the target facility SEARAY. The size of NAS Meridian may be compared to that of other major naval air stations such as NAS Pensacola, Fla., which has about 5,000 acres. More than 4,000 military, civilians and dependents work and/or live at the air station. Training Air Wing One (TW-1) was commissioned on August 2, 1971, as the first Training Air Wing to incorporate the single-site training concept. Until that time, jet aviation students received only the basic flight syllabus at NAS Meridian prior to being transferred to bases in Texas for advanced flight training.
With the conversion of Training Squadron Seven (VT-7) to an advanced training squadron and the initiation of air-to-air combat gunnery and carrier qualification instruction in Training Squadron Nine (VT-9), student naval aviators (SNA's) were able to complete the entire jet-training syllabus while stationed at NAS Meridian.
The mission of Training Air Wing One is to provide newly designated aviators to the fleet for further training in operational combat aircraft and is conveyed in the wing motto, "Readiness for Victory at Sea Through Training." The instructor pilot cadre at TW-1 is comprised of men and women from almost every Navy and Marine Corps aviation community as well as several international military exchange pilots, bringing an enormous array of fleet experience to the training command. Training Air Wing One is also tasked with training international military aviators from countries including France, Italy, Spain and Brazil.
Subordinate commands under Commander, Training Air Wing One include the "Eagles" of Training Squadron Seven and the "Tigers" of Training Squadron Nine. These squadrons receive SNA's from Training Air Wing Five (TW-5) at NAS Milton, Florida, and Training Air Wing Four (TW-4) at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas, upon their completion of primary flight training in the T-34C "Mentor."
VT-7 and VT-9 conduct Total System (TS) strike training in the Navy's newest jet trainer, the T-45C "Goshawk." Upon completion of the TS flight instruction syllabus, the SNA's are designated Naval Aviators and receive their "Wings of Gold."

Good evening, JJ...((HUGS))...any prospects for snow? We have a minimal chance. I’ve got more than 3/4 of the ice off the driveway. Maybe I’ll get it all off before we have snow.

We got nowhere near as much snow as they said we would. I think we got about 4-6" - the brunt of the storm apparently tracked south of us. Still, we had a layer of ice under the snow that fell - the roads were a mess.
My office was closed - I did not Sally Forth today. All the schools, with the exception of D.C., are closed. Not sure yet whether we're open tomorrow. We're at 11 degrees now - on our way to sub-zero by sunrise. That's very unusual for this region.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes, I’m honored and humbled.
What year does that photo come from? I remember taking Luvie for a ride on the old Harley. Maybe this Summer I’ll introduce our tranquil rural neighborhood to my other bike, the not so docile “Crazy Horse” a 47 Indian Chief bobber.
This is my fifth year since “the big scare” and all the radiaiton and chemotherapy, so now I have a renewed interest in celebrating my birthdays (as an older fella)
After all, that is the goal, ain’t it?
Augusta Republicans asking me to run again, saying it’s a sure seat, don’t think I will this time...maybe in two years.
This year, instead of Rolandeau’s, staying home with all the ribs and Guiness I can handle.
Thanks again folks....thanks for all you do for the troops and God Bless y’all!

You know something interesting? I have the official Army history of the battalion and in it, the army always, 100% of the time, spells pontoons as pontons. They always spell it that way but no body else does. I have never seen it spelled any other way but the U.S. Army Signal Corps seems to think that “ponton” is the right way.
They must use that word a thousand times in the history and never deviate from that spelling.

Two recitals coming up, one April 27 and the other is May 4th.
The kids are sounding great! :-)

Ice before snow is a terrible combination. Stay warm and safe, especially if you sally forth in the morning.
I am off for home. Back in a bit.

Hey Kathy,
Thanks so much for the birthday cat and song. The significance, for those of you in Rio Linda, is that I’m the keyboard player in our band, “The Practical Cats”.
You’re amazing with all you do for the troops, and everyone else!
(I hear it’s nice in Omaha this time of year.)
Thanks again and God bless ya.
