BOISE, Idaho Millions in tax revenue from Idaho's cigarette sales is closer to flowing toward the state's scarred-up highway asphalt and its drought-depleted aquifers.
The House voted 63-4 on Friday to redirect cash from the state's 56 cent-per-pack tax it has totaled about $35 million to $40 million annually that's currently being used to retire bonds for the $130 million Idaho Capitol renovation, as well as funding cancer programs, state buildings and juvenile probation.
With the Capitol bonds nearly paid off, there's been a scramble this session for the money that's no longer needed.

Money in the hands of politicians doesn’t stand a chance.
Nanny State PING!
So, the tax revenue no longer needed for paying off the bonds, is being redirected.
We never see a tax just go away if the intended purpose is satisfied, do we? Instead the tax stays there, while the politicos divert it to other uses.
Not saying Idaho doesn’t need pothole repairs, etc. Just questioning what’s happening, as what was a dedicated source of tax revenue is no longer needed for the intended purpose.
You have to love the cognitive dissonance in the last sentence of the excerpt: “With the Capitol bonds nearly paid off, there’s been a scramble this session for the money that’s no longer needed.”
They are scrambling to use money that is no longer needed? Give it back to the people then, cut the tax!
If there was so damned much money being suctioned off of the healthcare system to provide for smokers’ supposed drain on the system (negative health consequences of smoking), then put it into the system that necessitated the danged tax or finally relent that it wasn’t nearly the drain it was believed to be!
Hmmmm, money extracted from us for a (supposedly good) purpose.
Money only sparingly used for that purpose, the rest wasted.
When the purpose expires, massive competition to make the waste 100%.
And politicians wonder why they’re on the short list following CW-II for our guillotines.
And when all you smoke Nazis succeed in stamping out smoking and crushing the businesses that make them, what vice will you attack next?
Personally, I’m hoping that they attach a massive tax on being a frigging AGW liberal, or a jogger, or a $2000 graphite frame bicycle rider, or a Hybrid/battery powered car owner....or a Vegan, vegetarian.....any of that mess.
Isn’t the tobacco tax supposed to be used for the health care of the tobacco addicts?
“They are scrambling to use money that is no longer needed? Give it back to the people then, cut the tax!”
Obviously your radical comment is WAY out of the mainstream, as the House voted 63-4 on Friday to redirect cash from the state’s 56 cent-per-pack tax.
Thank you Meathead!
Further proof that smokers should be given medals for their heroic carrying of the several layers of government spending that they carry!
Thanks for the ping!
I guess I finally get to say back to my sister “I’m a radical now too!”.
“Further proof that smokers should be given medals for their heroic carrying of the several layers of government spending that they carry!”
