KIEV Russian President Vladimir Putin demanded and won his parliament's approval on Saturday to invade Ukraine, where the new government warned of war, put its troops on high alert and appealed to NATO for help.
Putin's open assertion of the right to send troops to a country of 46 million people on the ramparts of central Europe creates the biggest confrontation between Russia and the West since the Cold War.
Troops with no insignia on their uniforms but clearly Russian some in vehicles with Russian number plates - have already seized Crimea, an isolated peninsula in the Black Sea where Moscow has a large military presence in the headquarters of its Black Sea Fleet. Kiev's new authorities have been powerless to stop them.
The United States said Russia was in clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and called on Moscow to withdraw its forces back to bases in Crimea. It also urged the deployment of international monitors to Ukraine.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, leading a government that took power after Moscow's ally Viktor Yanukovich fled a week ago, said Russian military action "would be the beginning of war and the end of any relations between Ukraine and Russia".
Acting President Oleksander Turchinov ordered troops to be placed on high combat alert. Foreign Minister Andriy Deshchytsya said he had met European and U.S. officials and sent a request to NATO to "examine all possibilities to protect the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine".

The lesson we learn today is:
When you topple a murderous tyrant from power, don’t allow him to load trucks with ill gotten loot and drive away.
bump
It is not our war. Period.
The Presidents failures in Iran, Libia, Syria, Egypt and Afganastan have shown Putin that his downsizing of the military are total surrender. We will get nothing but lip service and lies from this president as he continues to disassemble and destroy the country that he hates.
“a country of 46 million people”
44 million people.
The two millions of Crimea people just left the building, moved out.
> It is not our war. Period.
But it’s Soros’ (the true Anti-Christ) war and his puppet has to do what he’s told.
Pro-Russia demonstrators wave Russian flags in Simferopol, Crimea
Confrontation? There is no confrontation.
I will be very, very surprised if this is still going on in a week.
Taiwan. Senkakyus. Paracels. South China Sea. Perhaps the 38th Parallel is no longer the barrier it was last week. The go ahead has been given by the President of the United States.
The real lesson is Russia is not willing to countenance a hostile Ukraine on its borders. Its going to nip it in the bud and send any one else tempted to mess around with Russia a sharp warning.
Russia doesn’t want Kiev’s affection; only its obedience.
Therein lies the real and present danger.
If we step back a few hundred years, there were vassals. The vassals paid homage to the hegemonic king.
That is my view. Putin is creating a vassal
And so ends the idiotic American “neo-conservative” pipe-dream in Eastern Europe.
Can’t imagine that Putin will launch a major attack on western Ukraine. Maybe the Eastern half that is sort of Pro-Russian—maybe he will back a restoration of the elected government—or just slice off what he wants. What can the uS do? Zip. Our Troops in Kabul use Russian airbases to gather supplies—Putin could cut them off. He could keep USA out of the space station—we can’t launch men into space anymore. What about western Europes Natural Gas—he could cut them off. If war comes—who will fight for Ukraine? Will the Poles, I don’t think so? The Slovaks? The Romanians? Will the Turks? Not our war. Its really too bad for Ukraine let us hope for the best and cool things down—Let the Bear take Criemea and hope that will be all.
For sure. At most there will be a few folks unfriending putin on facebook.....
Not everyone is in the comfortable Canadian position to hide behind America and shoot their worthless mouth off.
