Ukraine Puts Military on Full Alert After Russian Intervention Threat But Kiev's New Politicians Don't Offer Immediate Countermoves to Moscow By Margaret Coker And Alexander Kolyandr Updated March 1, 2014 6:33 p.m. ET

KIEV—Ukraine ordered its military to full combat alert after Russia's threat of military intervention in the country, but Kiev's new politicians didn't offer immediate countermoves to Moscow, amid reluctance by its Western supporters to stand with it militarily.

Ukraine's Security Council huddled throughout Saturday evening, while civil unrest spread during the day through eastern Ukraine and as Russian troops cut the strategic Crimean Black Sea peninsula from the rest of Ukraine. And the city council in the economically strategic eastern Russian-speaking city of Donetsk called for a referendum over possibly separating from the country.

When the Security Council meeting in Kiev broke up after several hours, the country's top leaders offered a mix of brave words. Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov said security units would beef up patrols around critical infrastructure across Ukraine, like nuclear reactors and ports. He said the military would be ready to defend its homeland. "I gave the order to reach full combat readiness, given the potential for aggression," Mr. Turchynov said in a statement.

Western diplomats familiar with Ukraine, however, expressed some doubt about Kiev's ability to mount an effective defense against heavily armed forces from neighboring Russia. Ukraine's military is largely manned by conscripts, and they have well-documented problems securing fuel and equipment, which would hinder their battle-readiness and effectiveness, two diplomats said. Russia is Ukraine's main supplier of energy.

The Ukrainian Army is not going to fight the Russians.

The only “army” that wants to fight the Russians are the Western Ukrainian Bandera Nazis and they’re going to get their asses kicked back to Lviv.

This is what happens when the presidency becomes a celebrity contest and uninformed people vote on style instead of substance.

If the international community accepts this partitioning, then the southwestern US belongs to Mexico

Maybe put each one of them inside a cannon and send them back to Lvov that way (like the false Dmitri).

If Russia is allowed to take the Ukraine, Poles and Czechs should put all of their efforts into either getting ready to fight endlessly by themselves with no support from the West or to return to the past. There’s no support against communist/fascist expansionism from the most influential constituents behind the politicians here (as seen on the Internet discussion forums).

Actually, I would say that the Muslim Tartars who were deported by Stalin and just returned to the Crimean homeland within the last ten to fifteen years would be willing to fight the Russians and they represent about 12 percent of the Crimean population.

In his statement Obama warned Putin that there would be ‘costs’. But what he meant was that Putin/Russia would have to buy gasoline, diesel fuel, bullets, food for his troops, etc. You don’t invade a country for free.

"If the international community accepts this partitioning, then the southwestern US belongs to Mexico"

Well, it does. They're already there, so why not? We don't want our focus to wander off of the final transition to the service/debt economy, so we're not getting involved in any more conflicts--no matter what. Besides, everyone knows that we can't do anything to stop Mexico from taking the homelands of its citizens. ;-)

That was expected it was crewed by Russian speakers. The greatest danger America faces is that Russia goes a yard to far and the Ukrainians pull the nuclear trigger.

The almighty empty suit has allowed the CIA to focus solely on computer intelligence. We are blind to real knowledge of the stockpiles.

Just remember this when amnesty comes up, do we really want tens of millions of people loyal to a foreign government concentrated in the southwest?

Ukraine has ordered general nationwide mobilization to commence at 0800 EET on 2 March 2014 - that’s about four and a half hours from now.

When I was in Kiev in 2012 and 2013, I was surprised the number of the locals that spoke some, if not fluent, English. They appeared to have a big push to teach English to the children. The further distant I was from the city the less prevalent it was. When I got to Simferopol, English was almost nonexistent except at the hotel.
