(CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked the upper house of parliament for approval to send Russian troops into Ukraine's Crimea region to normalize the political situation there, the Kremlin said Saturday.
Due to the "extraordinary situation in Ukraine," Putin said, there are threats to the lives of Russian citizens and Russian military personnel based in the southern Crimean region.
It comes on the same day that the new pro-Russian leader of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, asked Putin for help in maintaining peace in the Black Sea peninsula -- where Russia has a major naval base at Sevastopol.

Its not national pride. Without a warm weather port they are finished as an independent world power.
From last night’s “Happy Hour”, following ‘sternly worded’ remarks.
And during the speech an audience member yelled at one point, “Tell the public your plan — tell us about your plan for nuclear war with Russia!”
Obama downplayed the matter, saying, “What the heck are you talking about?” The audience then drowned out the heckler with chants of “Obama. Obama. Obama. Obama.”
An audience member then asked the president to tell us about your plans for nuclear war with Russia.
What the heck are you talking about? Mr. Obama said to laughter and applause. No, no, dont worry about it. Were OK. Have a seat. I dont know anything about that plan. I dont know what youve been reading. Let me return to what I was talking about. See, he thought happy hour started earlier.
You guys are such BS’ers. Criticize Obama without any concrete alternative for action. You’re like liberals with Bush.
Russians in the Ukraine?
Venezuelans dying in the streets?
More people becoming uninsured under ObamaCare?

The resolution allows Russia to intervene anywhere in Ukraine where there are threats to Russia’s interests and the lives of its citizens.
And the Russian tricolor is starting to make an appearance in parts of Ukraine’s Russian speaking east, not just the Crimea.
So Moscow can now expand its operation if fraternal appeals for assistance begin emerging elswhere in Ukraine.
Well, then...parallels as they exist, Russian intervention is all legal & justified. /s
I’m stunned seeing that useless event is actually top of the fold news on many websites while SIHTF in Europe.
No. The overriding, important, pressing issue of the day is gay marriage.
Well.. they do have a formal request from the new Crimean Prime Minister.
It reminds me of old Soviet tactics - they always used to find a friendly leader while airlifting in troops.
Nothing has changed.
Russian senate to ask Putin to recall ambassador to U.S. after Obamas comments On Ukraine
LOL! Lighten up, Francis. I'm just awaiting commands/dictates/mandates/utterances from convoluted King Hussein. Perhaps someone could stick a microphone in Jorge Bush's face. He seemed to be OK with Pooty Poot.
Which is more authorization than Zero obtained before attacking Libya.
For starters, Obama could use the threat of freezing assets/seizing Russian accounts in the USA. Remind them we have a couple of ships in the Black Sea.
Russia does have interests in the Crimean Peninsula, however. But we need to let them know we’re watching and actions need not escalate. Just a few friendly reminder.
Yup.
The Americans are hypocrites - they helped to overthrow a foreign dictator and American lives aren’t even imperiled.
And in a country close to Russia, ethnic Russian and Russian-speaking Ukrainians lives are under real threat. And where does the West have the effrontery to tell Russia NOT to intervene to protect them?
Obama has done a stupendous job weakening US foreign policy. Next up is the military.
I’d say he’s doing pretty much what he intended to do.
