Petula Clark had been waxing records since the late 1940's. However, she had been unable to score on this side of the Atlantic until "Downtown," a song that stayed at #2 for a number of weeks in Los Angeles but was unable to knock the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" out of the top spot.
This is my favorite of her songs:
Tout au long du Calendrier (Calendar Girl) (1961)

Here is the story of “The Chicken Ranch” and Marvin Zindler who is the culprit who had it shut down:
Nobody and I mean NOBODY wanted him to interfere with the Chicken Ranch! Not only was it out of his jurisdiction, so to speak, his past put the whammy on him. He had been a bailiff in one of Houston’s local courts. He got fired from that but had a friend who was on the Channel 13/local ABC affiliate. Channel 13 hired him as an investigative reporter.
He went after the Chicken Ranch only to make a name for himself. After that his only ‘accomplishment’ was that he did his ‘weekly restaurant report’. He went with the Houston city health inspectors to local restaurants and then reported on the restaurants that one should refuse to go to.
He would then report these ‘dirty restaurants’ as if HE did the inspections. He was comical with these reports although he was not intending the humor. He would say things similar to the following:
( Restaurant name ) had evidence of cockroaches! ( Restaurant name ) had evidence of rats! ( Restaurant name ) had evidence of mice! But his favorite was, “(Restaurant name ) had SLIME IN THE ICE MACHINE!”, ( emphasis his, not mine ). There was even a parody song written about ‘slime in the ice machine’.
He was a caricature of himself in addition to being totally repulsive. When there would be a minority involved in his report he was SO condescending that it was sickening.
Even the anchor reporters would make fun of him. That is how repulsive he was.

Here's yet another song Paul McCartney gave away to Peter Asher in 1965. By 1966 it was a top 10 hit in America. "D'oh".

Not to be outdone by Paul's generosity, John Lennon gave this throw-away song to his pal Billy Kramer. The song raced up the charts and won The Dakotas an opening spot on The Beatles first North American tour.

George Harrison was never a principal songwriter for The Beatles, but in retrospect he wrote some of their best, e.g. "Something", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes The Sun", "Taxman" and "If I Needed Someone" to name a few. He wrote this one and in true Lennon/McCartney style gave it to his best friend, Eric Clapton (who was secretly having an affair with Harrison's wife Patti, for whom he composed the "Layla" album and latter married). Eric and George remained close friends until Harrison's death in 2001. The same year (1991), another Harrison friend, Gary Moore, covered the song with George sittin' in on slide.

ROCKUMENTARY: MARCH 1, 1965
#23 Shirley Bassey: GoldfingerFor many of us, there will only be one James Bond, and that is Sean Connery. If only we guys could all age as well as he has. The film had Gert Frobe in the role of Auric Goldfinger, and he was to steal Those Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines away from the rest of the cast a year later.
Shirley Bassey had a long and honored career in the UK, but she had only one American hit. The introduction is one of the most amazing things recorded in that era. It grabs you by the neck.
