BRUSSELS Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel warned Russia on Thursday to stay out of the turmoil in Ukraine, while NATO defense ministers issued repeated statements meant to show support for the new leadership in Kiev.
We expect other nations to respect Ukraines sovereignty and avoid provocative action, Mr. Hagel said after the ministers met at NATO headquarters here. Thats why Im closely watching Russias military exercises along the Ukrainian border, which they just announced yesterday.
The Russian defense minister, Sergey K. Shoigu, was quoted by state news media saying the exercises were meant to check combat readiness of armed forces in western and central military districts as well as several branches of the armed forces. Though General Shoigu did not mention Ukraine, Western officials interpreted the exercises as a warning from Moscow. Continue reading the main story Related Coverage

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the secretary general of the NATO, posted Twitter messages Thursday morning warning Russia not to intervene in Ukraine after armed men seized a government headquarters in the Crimea region of southern Ukraine and raised the Russian flag.
I urge Russia not to take any action that can escalate tension or create misunderstanding, Mr. Rasmussen wrote on Twitter. Im concerned about developments in Crimea. In a news conference later in the day, Mr. Rasmussen called the Crimea events dangerous and irresponsible.

Hagel cuts his own d off yesterday cutting our military and now threatens Putin, what a comedy!
I think it was a mistake for the Ukraine to turn over their nukes to Russia after the breakup. At one time, they were the fourth largest nuclear power in the world. Then again, had things happens they do now, it can be more dangerous when it gets to the point where they start trading Kiev of Moscow or Lvov for Leningrad/St. Petersburg.
Hahahahahahahaha - Putin
Russia takes Hagel almost as seriously as they take Obama.
It must be absolutely great to be Vladimir Putin. Imagine how Gorbachev feels at this moment. Putin gets Barky while he got Reagan.
has the EU said anything about this? Wasn’t this all started over EU vs Russia ties??
Is it me or does Chuck Hagel look like he is hung over during his Confirmation hearing?
Napolitano didn't answer.
I blieve you are correct.
Europe is determined to drag us into another World War.
It wouldn't be wise for Obama to get into a serious face off with Putin.
The Crimeans are welcoming Russian soldiers with open arms. Chuck Hagel’s army can’t lift a fly-swatter. And NATO is a hallowed out shell.
This is not Serbia the US is dealing with. This is the largest country in the world. He should brush up on Russian history. Both Napoleon and Hitler tried to defeat Russia and lost their empires.
The Russians laugh off warnings made by people who should never issue them to begin with when they are not serious about them in the first place.
Russia can do whatever they wish with Ukraine.
Any talk of military intervention, by anyone, is mere foolishness at best, and a serious danger more likely.
Not this is not the 1980s. Back then, with a real President...and a much, much bigger military...we would still have only issued admonishment. Maybe put some forces on alert and move some around...but there would have been no military action.
A paper tiger here too.
If it ever came to a shootin' match they'd fold like a cheap suit.
Sure, they'll take on INDIVIDUALS, but they'd pi$$ themselves if even 10,000 men started shooting back. Especially once they realized that the majority of their "protection" would not be on their side.
Frankly, the fear of hanging keeps them awake at night.
Obama is the kind of guy who would throw in troops without the proper clearance to fight back
Laughable.
Our military leaders are too busy coming up with new slogans and gimmicks. The latest is a mustache and nail contest. I sh!t you not. This came down from the top of the USAF.
Oh no! Can a Sternly Worded Letter be coming?
Snerk!
1) Immediately have the US and the EU confer with Ukraine and tell them to NOT attack the Russian troops in the Crimea. Have them immediately mobilize their forces to their borders and take up positions and prepare and make any further Russian aggression have to come through their prepared positions. Right now the Crimea is lost, and attacking them there will only invite a much larger invasion and the potential loss of all of the Ukraine.
2) The US should immediately start flying C-17s into Kiev (the Ukraine Capitol) loaded with advisors, provisions, trainers, and a a security force for those people. We cannot get enough people there to stop Putin at this point, but we can show him that the price for taking the Ukraine has now gone up and would be too steep for him.
3) Have the NATO and Euopean countries (Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Spain) do the same thing (Number 2) at other critical points throughout the Ukraine.
4) Immediately move to make the rest of the Ukraine a part of NATO.
5) Hasten the Ukraines entry into the EU.
That's sheer insanity and those actions would never have my support or the support of 90% of the American people OR US Military.
Precipitate a nuclear war for the Ukraine, which Russia already has, and has for over 400 years?
That nuts. I'm glad you're not in a position to influence these events.
