How Corporate America Forced Arizona Bill's Veto
ABC News ^ | 02/27/2014 | SCOTT MAYEROWITZ

When an important social issue intersected with business in Arizona, Corporate America decided it was time to take a stand.

Voicing concern for their employees, customers and bottom lines, prominent companies from American Airlines to Verizon used threats of reduced business to help convince Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer to veto legislation that would have allowed businesses to refuse service to gays based on the owner's religious beliefs.

Companies have long spoken out about certain issues they felt threatened their bottom lines, such as taxation and the minimum wage. The strong opposition to the Arizona bill signals an acknowledgement by businesses that it's not just economic policies that can be harmful to their profits. They need to be more willing than ever to wade into social issues.

Companies also recognize that many of their employees and customers are gay and try to forester an open and inviting corporate environment.

"Business used to restrict itself to economic issues but they're now seeing the importance of other kinds of issues," said Darrell M. West, vice president of governance studies at the Brookings Institution.

The measure Brewer vetoed Wednesday night would have allowed people to cite their religious beliefs as a defense against claims of discrimination. She faced intense pressure from gay rights supporters, prominent politicians and local businesses. But ultimately, it might have been the national business community that tipped the scales.

"They seem to have had a dramatic impact on the decision," West said. "When you get major companies weighing in about the possible negative impact, that makes a big difference."

Arizona is a large tourism and convention destination. The state is the spring training home to several Major League Baseball teams and is hosting the Super Bowl next year.

Big Business has been forcing leftist policies on people for a while now, and gay marriage was no. 1.

Voicing concern for their employees, customers and bottom lines...

BS. If their were huge boycotts against these companies and they lost millions, they would change their decision. Its all about the bottom line.

I’m really to a point where if the Dems started pushing a bill to tax the snot out of “corporate America,” I wouldn’t protest. To hell with them. They have contributed mightily to turning America into the depraved cesspool it has become.

If I were the governor of a State receiving this kind of ultimatum from a corporation, I'd be referring them to my State AG.

I have heard that America already has the highest tax rates on corporations in the world. Not disagreeing with you, just saying it can't get much worse.

It would have been ruled unconstitutional by some libtard judge even if she’d signed it into law.

I am done with the NFL. MLB.came in cheer leading right at the end

Imus and all the guys on that show who pretend to be men have been championing this stuff oblivious to the pressures it puts on religious observers They use late night TV hosts as proof of what’s popular as if studio audiences aren’t told what to applaud at and what to laugh at

New Yorkers listen to this on the radio. They think they’re thinking- its the opposite

I work with gays we coexist This puts pressure where there was none

And biden started it

I agree in spirit with the taxing “corporate America”, but the Corps doing this are the giant multi-nationals for the most part, that really don’t give a crap about the taxes, they just pass it onto consumers. It hurts the smaller corporations that might have a 100 even 1000 workers; that are just trying to survive.

A panic all ginned up by the gaymeisters.

What was to fear from their point of view? They already determined they were going after the “gay” market. This law wouldn’t force them not to. Wha hoppen?

“Companies also recognize that many of their employees and customers are gay and try to forester an open and inviting corporate environment.”

Hmmm....are any of their employees and customers Christian?

Oh, I’d still stand up for small businesses and their owners. I’ve historically been kneejerk anti-tax, regardless. But these corporate multi-nationals, in bed with the socialist government via crony-esque partnerships, as well as pushing the deviant homo agenda... I have utter contempt for them. They are the enemy to everything I value.

It’s all about the money. They would have supported Nazis in Germany because, after all, Nazis make and can spend more money.

Christians do “buycotts” a lot better than boycotts... it’s ingrained in the gospel. Do something good and you will see a Chik-Fil-A phenomenon. Do something bad and meh, after a few months nobody knows the difference.

Isn't it remarkable how the only conservative victory in recent years has been lowering the taxes of big business and the rich. It seems as though they are conservative only when it affects their bottom line. The more we lower their taxes the less conservative they are and the ones left are completely feckless country club sell out monkeys.

“I have heard that America already has the highest tax rates on corporations in the world. Not disagreeing with you, just saying it can’t get much worse.”

If so they de\srerve it. The rates might be high but thanks to the political system with loopholes etc they probably end up paying less.

We have an epidemic spiritual problem here.

Conservative has to be viewed in context. America used to have a good enough gospel/bible foundation that it was noticeable. Perfect no, distinctive yes.

Conservative here means something different than, say, conservative in Russia just coming out of the Communist era (in which conservatives would be pro-communism, obviously).

Anyhow it’s the gospel which has to be grasped again. Without that, all manner of ungodly ills beset the country.

Well there’s a problem trying to sock it to your neighbor without socking it to yourself as well. Interconnected economic system.

The solution is orthogonal to all this. It is the gospel.
