CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is expressing concern about Venezuela's escalating political crisis and wants to meet with leaders on both sides in an upcoming trip.
Carter, a mediator of past political conflict in the deeply polarized South American nation, made the offer in private letters he sent this week to President Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Henrique Capriles.
Expressing "grave concern" about the loss of life in recent protests and the risk of more conflict ahead, Carter in the letter to Capriles said that for dialogue aimed at easing tensions to succeed both side must "send signals of their willingness to alleviate the present state of tension."
For the opposition, that means making clear its commitment to act within constitutional limits and strongly reject violence, the Nobel peace laureate wrote. In turn the government must guarantee the right to peaceful protest and impartial justice for jailed protesters.
"It is difficult for elected officials from opposition parties to resolve differences when they feel threatened and persecuted," Carter wrote.

Maybe we will get lucky and they will throw him in jail.
Most of the people in this country weren’t even born when this jerk was President. They have no idea what a disaster he was. Gas lines, Hostages, Double Digit Inflation, Double Digit Interest Rates, Double Digit Unemployment and his gutting of the military. Obama is terrible, but he still has a way to go to be as bad as Carter. Of course, there is still 3 years to go.
Please Venezuela, keep him.
These guys sure have a lot of “grave concerns”.
Bon voyage - close the borders.
ME TOO!
Carter needs to be careful in Venezuela. They have capybaras, which are much bigger rodents than rabbits.
(Yes, I know that rabbits technically aren't rodents.)
If they have any sense down there they should tell Carter to go home! After 4 year of Carter and the Democrats in the White House inflation in the US was at”6.8% in 1977, 9% in 1978, 11% in 1979, and hovered around 12% at the time of the 1980 election campaign”, a total 40%! Of course everything after Carter cost a whole lot more which is certainly reflected in the price of things we pay for today. Those who can should remember the successive price stickers on grocery store’s inventory items before the item could be sold because of the spiraling increase in inflation. The stores did not remove the old price sticker they just stuck new ones on top of the old. It took Ronald Reagan to straighten out the mess Carter started. Hopefully someone like Ted Cruz can straighten the current mess out!

“Ex-President Carter planning trip to Venezuela”
COOL! Maybe we can convince them to KEEP him??
Just maybe jimmah is volunteering to BE toilet paper for the Argentinians. (an apt use of his considerable talent)
100% Spot-on correct. Did the Peanut-man borrow more than all Presidents previous to him combined? Nope. Did he have a job killing, slavery producing Health Care plan that was passed into law? Nope. Did he bail out entire industries? Nope. All the rest of the crappola he can justifiably be blamed for, was temporary and thus as you mentioned recoverable. And the recovery under Reagan was fairly easy and fairly quick too. Any recovery after Obama is going to take decades if ever for us to recover.
