Michael Sam: Combine Results and Instant Reaction

NFL teams have met Michael Sam, the person. They unsurprisingly came away with glowing reviews. But when it comes to Michael Sam, the football player, workouts at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine proved why some teams have concerns about his acclimation to playing on Sundays.

Sam's drill performances and athletic times were a mixed bag, as the former Missouri standout finished about average among defensive ends. While that's to be expected for a mid-round prospect like Sam—especially given the immense spotlight he's been under since announcing that he is gay—the reaction from NFL teams will be interesting to watch.

A 4.91 forty. Broadjump of about 9 feet. Only 17 reps of 225 pounds. None of those are NFL caliber scores. The obvious answer is that all those tests are biased against him because he's gay. </sarcasm>

4.9 / 40? Slow as my grandma. Only 12 reps of 225 on the bench press - WEAK

He's going to the front office or something, not the field - he's slow and weak. He played it smart though. He knows he doesn't have the physical attributes to play in the USFL let alone the NFL - he gets the LSM cheering for him - bingo -

Of course, you won’t here these average stats discussed on ESPN today.

Seventeen reps actually. But still not an impressive show. It pretty much confirms him as a mid to low rounder and probably someone who can be successful on the line only if he's surrounded by better talent. Pretty much like he was at Mizzou.

His future is not as a tight end, but instead a wide receiver.

He had better be the number one overall pick though.

With those stats and the combination of the media circus he would create for a team it might be hard for him to get drafted. That would be a real freaking shame, I'm sure everyone was looking forward to non-stop gay issue promotion and reporting on NFL Sundays.

You would think. But he's the first openly gay player entering the draft. I have no doubt that the NFL will tell some team "You will draft him" just so they can avoid all the "He wasn't drafted because he's a homosexual" comments.

Isn’t he supposed to be light in his sneakers?

So he says. Obviously doesn't translate to speed in the 40.

17 reps @ 225 lbs...really?

I might call that limp wristed for a NFL defensive end...

20 years ago when I was in my 30’s I could do that....

With dead weights....

If he were a white Christian from the South, he would be looking for a job selling used cars by now.

You're 100% correct. I suspect it will be one of the NY teams, or the Patriots..with a 5th round pick....Goodell will tell them they have to "take one for the league"

I was watching "NFL Insiders" on ESPN yesterday. They were discussing Sam. One of the guests said that all the media attention the last few weeks might have emotionally drained Sam, been a huge distraction, and thus affected his performance at the combine. Bill Polian, former Colts GM..jumped all over that, said "EXACTLY!! a distraction!! and that's why NFL teams HATE distractions."

But what owner would want someone that you can't cut (He was only cut because he's gay) that you can't discipline (He's only in trouble because he's gay) and who will bring discord and disease into the locker room?

Not to mention the well deserved damage to the teams reputation (Tampa Gay bucaneers!, Dallas cowgirls, etc etc etc)

I can't see any owner allowing himself to be afflcited with this (unless there were several bonus draft picks involved. Say one bonus pick per round for the next three years.

Football is a game for men, not for faggots. If I wanted to watch faggots I'd watch figure skating.

I’m sure that the NFL will lower their standards to be more “inclusive.” I’m in my 50s with bad knees and a rebuilt left ankle, but if I was black and gay, I’d have a shot.

On PFT, I posted to a “Sam” thread (written by Mike Florio) that allowing homosexuals in the NFL would have serious repercussions.

Since these perverts are more likely to have AIDS from their anal teabagging, their blood becomes a danger to normal players.

Obviously in an NFL game, bloody cuts & gashes occur and ultimately that blood will infect a heterosexual player.

Lawsuits from that infection and ultimate death will bankrupt the teams and NFL.

Not surprising, PFT deleted my post to keep the truth off their website.

If this guy hadn’t announced he was gay we would never had heard of him. With these numbers he might wind up on the taxi squad.

He won’t be the #1 pick, but some of the mock drafts have him sneaking into the first round, taken by the Super Bowl champion Seahawks.

As I’ve said on other threads: Michael Sam’s decision to come out now is aimed at enhancing his NFL prospects, pure and simple. On talent alone, Sam is a mid-to-late round selection and there are plenty of GMs who would only offer a free agent contract.

But, as the “first openly gay prospect,” Sam made himself the focus of the combine and there are plenty of “progressive” organizations in the NFL who would be willing to take a chance on him, including the Steelers, the Patriots and of course, Seattle.

And once he’s in camp, Sam becomes very difficult to cut, for the negative publicity it would bring. I can easily see Michael Sam getting dumped onto the developmental squad (ahead of better players) because the team likes the favorable publicity of having the first gay player.

If that happens, Sam will be poison in the club house. NFL players want to win, and they don’t want the front office doing favors for players who don’t measure up.

But, because he’s gay, I can see Sam hanging around the league for 4-5 years—far longer than his career should last.
