LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
Traffic cameras have watched Lubbock streets before, but within six months, they were gone.
That was five years ago, but the option may be back on the table. This time, it could be speeding cameras throughout Lubbock County.
Recently, Lubbock County was approached by American Traffic Solutions about installing speeding cameras in the county's school zones. That's the same company that put up Lubbock's controversial red light cameras in 2008.
But before the option is even considered, Precinct One commissioner Bill McCay tells us they're weighing every option.
"If there's something broken that needs to be fixed, then great, if its something that's not broken, then why try to fix it," McCay said.
McCay believes the first step is meeting with each district to decide if this is needed.
"We need to know and understand what each particular school district situation is," McCay said.
According to American Traffic Solutions, these cameras would come at no cost to the county. It could actually mean nearly $18 million in revenue for Lubbock County after they split ticket revenue with the company 50/50.
"It's too early to tell. I don't know. It's not about revenue, it's about public safety," Precinct Two commissioner Mark Heinrich said.
While Heinrich says it's supposed to be about safety, his opponent in the Republican Primary has questions.
"What are the motives are behind this? Whether it's really about safety, or if it's about profit for this company," John David Bruegel said.
But for now, McCay says any decision is a long way off.
"It may be great, but we're a long ways from that," McCay said.
“””I have no problem with the laws on the books being enforced... if ‘taxing’ people who think they’re above the law by ticketing them is happening - good for the city. Saves the rest of us from paying higher taxes. “””
Which laws are those? When did it become illegal for a VEHICLE to run a light or speed? The ticket is not sent to the person committing the crime, it is sent to the owner of the vehicle.
However, I do appreciate you telling us the liberal justification for this one.
It’s not liberal justification.
If you loan your car to someone you take a risk. If you’re not man enough to take the risk, don’t loan your car out...
If I loaned my car to someone and they got a ticket I would assume they would insist on paying for it. Then again, I don’t hang out with lowlifes...
“Truly one of the dumbest posts ever”
Looks like you are “alone” with your thoughts! This is from another poster responding to me on the same post!
“Texas is the Republican Party of the States living off of a reputation that, even if once deserved, is certainly not deserved now because the reality is pretty much antithetical to the reputation.”
What’s really dumb is that you don’t recognize that Texas is heading down the same road as CA has been on for some time. Maybe you should go home and take a look around for yourself.

Thanks. Now I know what the liberal talking points are.
Bullcrap. They DECREASE public safety. Their only purpose is vacuuming the pockets of citizens.
You think liberal talking points have something to do with taking person responsibility for your actions? That’s news to me shelterguy...
It is odd that you are in favor of Big Brother government tactics. It is not my job nor responsibility to take the heat for something somebody else does when they are driving a vehicle licensed to me. You liberals apparently think differently.
What is dumb is that you are using wendy davis as a candidate to indicate that Texas is not conservative when every state, including your own, runs an idiot dem in every spot in every election. And I’ll still take our Republican leaders over most from other states despite a few freepers thinking everyone has to have every single view on every single issue exactly the same with no leeway. I’m so glad ONE freeper agreed with you though, however that doesn’t mean I am alone in my views.
I’m not a liberal but I sure don’t think like you do... If I loan my car to someone I take responsibility... that seems pretty conservative to me.
There is NOTHING conservative about defending Big Brother cameras. We are not responsible for the actions of others.
The city of Houston contracted with a local company to install red-light cameras.
After the cameras were installed we, the people, had the cameras put on the ballot and voted against the cameras. The city had to remove all of the cameras. The local company who did the installations then sued the city for breach of contract! Lubbock should follow our lead. ;-)
I think Lubbock has already tried it once in the past and it was shot (figuratively, of course :) ) by the people there. My town is trying to get them approved too. They are an expensive intrusion! Plus....they really COULD get shot down here. LOL!
Amen!
LOL @ “really could get shot down here!”
