Markos Moulitsas: A blue Georgia
The Hill ^ | February 18, 2014 | Markos Moulitsas

Demographic changes are inevitably driving Texas and Arizona into purple — and eventually blue — territory. The growth of the Latino population is poised to overwhelm predominantly conservative white voters in both states, absent a genuine and successful rebranding by the Republican Party. But another red state will reach that status sooner: Georgia.

After Mitt Romney’s 2-point victory in North Carolina during the 2012 race, Georgia was the second closest red state at the presidential level. President Obama lost it by 7.8 points in 2012, after losing it by just over 5 points in 2008. In raw vote totals, that was 304,861 and 204,636 votes, respectively. A big number, certainly, but one that is artificially inflated by nonparticipation of core Democratic constituencies in the state. Given changing trends, Georgia’s march toward the Democratic column is inevitable.

SECESSION!

Is the only answer.

It's too late for that. Les jeux sont fait.

The slight violet hue you are imagining over Georgia is because the last two Presidential candidates were not nearly Conservative enough for Red Georgia voters, so the Conservative voters stayed home, while the “blue” vote turned out in force for Obama.

Does anyone remember when “latino” was just another way of saying illegal alien or gang member youths?

Legitimate cultural discussions used the term “Hispanic”.

Liberal dreaming as usual. GA has almost a GOP supermajority in both state houses. Governor, Lt Gov, SOS etc republican. Two republican senators.

Unless the GOP starts winning what were called Reagan Democrats we seem to be screwed.

I don't think there are Reagan Democrats anymore. As the Democrat party has moved further and further to the left, those Reagan Democrats have either become Republicans or forsaken both parties altogether.

Nonsense. The dems were whining the same thing when Bush was re-elected back in 2008.

Most people are conservatives at heart, notwithstanding what they’ve been indoctrinated with in public schools and by the liberal media.

The darkest hour is just before dawn. Vote for conservatives, not Republicans.

All excellent points which should temper the attitudes of anyone who would boldly claim “a solid South” - or any part of the nation. While there may be pockets here and there nationwide that have fairly reliable voting bases the last several election cycles have demonstrated that there are no locks that can (or should) be counted on.

The one element that I haven’t seen articulated yet is the siren song of the “Santa Clause Syndrome”, the leftist tactic of winning votes (and thus control) by giving away free stuff (at taxpayer expense). We’ve seen it played out many times since Øbongo seized the reins - the woman who enthusiastically claimed post-election, “Now we have someone who will take care of me and buy my gasoline!” to the infamous “Øbamaphone” lady to the startling statistics of the flood of people to public assistance.

How can we counter the allure of “free stuff” when all we have to offer is the promise that if you work hard and live clean you’ll eventually be rewarded? I am of the opinion that the only thing that will work in our favor is that the money won’t last forever - that leftist largesse only works as long as they have other people around to pay for it.

Dark days ahead.

Agreed...absloutely right. The more we lowered their taxes the fewer wealthy conservatives there are and the more feckless the remaining became. That was a big mistake.

Voter quals in congressional elections were up to the states.

The Framers’ check on runaway democracy was a senate of the states. The 17th Amendment was a horrible mistake.

My point is that the electorate has changed so much that the numbers in our favor are just not there. Look at the increase in South American immigrants (not prone to having American values anyway...they’re here for the ride) and the number of people on food stamps and other forms of welfare. I don’t think that the latter category will be willing to give it up.

And Texas (which is considered the leader in such a scenario of secession) is trending blue.

At least that’s the way I see it. But I’ve never thought of myself as a cock-eyed optimist, anyway. You obviously see things differently...and you may right—I hope so.
