After unprecedented interference from politicians and out-of-state extremists like Grover Norquist and the Koch brothers, workers at Volkswagens Chattanooga, Tenn., plant voted 712626 against representation by the UAW that would have led to the establishment of a works council, the first such model of labor-management relations in the United States.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka says the workers stood up to enormous odds to try to form their own union and to create an historic new model of workplace governance. He adds:
Unconscionably, what should have been a local workplace decision by workers and management was turned into an experiment in new forms of right-wing zealotry over issues having nothing to do with how stakeholders decided for themselves the best way to build automobiles and create a strong Chattanooga community.
While Volkswagen had agreed to remain neutral, Republican lawmakers and right-wing groups mounted a large-scale anti-union attack. UAW Region 8 Director Gary Casteel, who directs the unions southern organizing, says:
Unfortunately, politically motivated third parties threatened the economic future of this facility and the opportunity for workers to create a successful operating model that would grow jobs in Tennessee.
Says UAW President Bob King:
While we certainly would have liked a victory for workers here, we deeply respect the Volkswagen Global Group Works Council, Volkswagen management and IG Metall for doing their best to create a free and open atmosphere for workers to exercise their basic human right to form a union.
Trumka says:
But, make no mistake, the closeness of the results and the courage and tenacity of union supporters prove that this election is a minor setback, and not a permanent defeat.
Opposing LEFT-WING zealotry.
Darn UAW parasites.Put some ice on it Trumka.
I guess if they had gotten their way then they would be left wing zealots?
FINALLY!!!!!
How long before Obama’s NLRB thugs ride to the rescue??
Mongol General: Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.
Dissent is not patriotic! Dissent is treason!

Conviction and zeal, wielded in the proper place at the proper time. Yes indeed.
Liberals cannot conceive of the fact that not everyone buys into their philosophy. Maybe Trumpka should take some lessons from the days when unions worked for their members rather than the democrat party.
I’ve been in unions and been in management both in union and non union shops. In all instances I could not stand anything about unions.
No, it was historic when Marx first suggested it in the 19th century. But the workers owning the means of production is hardly new.
And, in the case of the Tennessee VW plant, it was hardly successful either.
Trumka’s anger will soon be followed by the sound of bones breaking.
Unions. Making sure workers get paid what the least among them is worth.
Shut up Dick! When Americans want any crap out of you, we’ll unscrew your head and dip it out, you America-hating, greedy thug.
These Unions are stuck in the 1960’s. They are bitter clingers. Society has moved on from Gun control.
Unions need to be more tolerant of people with patriotic tattoos and people who own guns.
Good job boys.
Looks like they decided to exercise their basic human right to tell the union pigs to take a hike.
