Workers at Tennessee Volkswagen factory reject United Auto Workers union

Workers at a Volkswagen factory in Tennessee have voted against union representation in a devastating defeat for the United Auto Workers union's effort to make inroads in the South. The 712-626 vote released late Friday was surprising for many labor experts and union supporters who expected a UAW win because Volkswagen tacitly endorsed the union and even allowed organizers into the Chattanooga factory to make sales pitches. "This is like an alternate universe where everything is turned upside down," Cliff Hammond, a labor lawyer at in Detroit, told The Wall Street Journal, noting that companies usually fight union drives. "This vote was essentially gift-wrapped for the union by Volkswagen," said Hammond, who previously worked at the Service Employees International Union. The setback is a major defeat for the UAW's effort to expand in the growing South, where foreign automakers have 14 assembly plants, eight built in the past decade, said Kristin Dziczek, director of the labor and industry group at the Center for Automotive Research, an industry think tank in Michigan. "If this was going to work anywhere, this is where it was going to work," she said of Chattanooga.

Organizing a Southern plant is so crucial to the union that UAW President Bob King told workers in a speech that the union has no long-term future without it. ................This is the best part of it.

"If the union can't win [in Chattanooga], it can't win anywhere," Steve Silvia, a economics and trade professor at American University who has studied labor unions, told the Journal....................Let's hope so.

No, the best part, the very best part, was where a US Senator, Bob Corker, announced that if the union was turned down VW would begin making an SUV there.

Imagine, a Republican Senator playing hard ball, really hard ball. He stuck his thumb in the eye of the UAW and his finger in the eye of Richard Trumka and the AFL-CIO.

VW couldn’t make any actions against the union but their Senator could....... he did. How sweet it is.

Good luck with this thread. The mod pulled mine. I guess because this story is so minor and inconsequential, only one article on it can be posted.

Ed Schultz.....a few days back, the moron on MSNBC, was raving about what a gigantic win was coming forth for the UAW and the Obamabot low life types that lead the industrial unions like the UAW and are gleefully, hand in hand with Obama, destroying the USA economy and jobs!!! Terrific win for the American people, the economy and good paying, stable jobs!!! Total loss for Obama, Democrat dirt bags and the current labor union leadership!!! Lovely!!!!

If UAW Dictator-in-Chief Bob King is an honest man, he will disband the UAW and return all the funds in its coffers to its members. After all, the UAW has no future. But he will keep the UAW alive as long as he can because the UAW members pay his inflated salary.

I was surprised the vote was as close as was reported. East TN folks are pretty independent. They can see what happened to Detroit.

Can you say I dare you; give it your best shot. Maybe VW knows its employees and its strengths better than the almighty UAW, and trusted they would win anyway;
and by giving the UAW every opportunity, they have effectively killed it for the future, too.

I guess Sen. Corker's efforts are the “Republican dirty tricks” the liberal socialist pro-union folks are crying about on tv.
Doesn't occur to them that maybe the workers figured out for themselves that the union would kill their jobs.

I wonder how many of the 626 “yes” voters had a “friendly” visit from UAW thug organizers.

The two are not mutually exclusive.

Even if he knew the outcome would be favorable, the opportunity to kick the crap out of the union by acting on behalf of his corporate constituent and his voters was just big an opportunity to for go.

...even President Barack Obama waded into the discussion early on Friday, accusing Republican politicians of being more concerned about German shareholders than U.S. workers. Same old class warfare argument.

Hey! Bozo! This vote means more jobs here in the US, not in Mexico. How about dropping the political posturing and look at the facts. You and Karl Marx are not welcomed in TN. Indeed, if I had my druthers, you wouldn't be welcomed anywhere in the Western Hemisphere.

I was perusing this story at Huffington Post...

Basically the majority of the moonbats over there think "Southern" people have some type of psychological disorder that makes them vote against their best interest and hate unions for no apparent reason...

Quite humorous to read their comments...so full of their moronic selfs and thinking they understand the south...

I wonder if the UCAW (United Communist Auto ‘Workers’) will say that the vote was a fraud. Hey, UCAW, the VW workers told you to F off. You wreck America’s automobile companies, now you are trying to wreck the others? No, we won’t bail them out if you do wreck them.
