Obama is a big fan of the NBA and a former player himself.

Zero was an NBA player? Really? Maybe the writer meant Zero played street basketball but thought he would whore himself.

Hey, We had a hoop in our driveway when I was a kid, so I’m a former player as well. Me and my friends played wiffle ball in the street, so I can be mentioned in the same breath as MLB players.

If he means ‘NBA player’, he’s just playing to the low-info crowd, who will believe him. I can imagine bloggers and DU calling him a former NBA player henceforth.

If he means ‘has had pickup games with friends’, that would be ongoing and there’s no reason to modify it with ‘former’.

Or maybe the author is just a bad writer.
