Montana Gov. Steve Bullock said Friday he told Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to mind his own damn business when the Nevada Democrat phoned him last year in an effort to influence his appointment to succeed Max Baucus in the Senate.
According to an account in the Helena Independent Record, Bullock told Montana reporters about his terse words with Reid. The phone call occurred before the administrations announcement that Baucus would be nominated to be ambassador to China.
The Nevada Democrat had a big stake in the electability of Bullocks pick. Reids party can lose no more than five Senate races to maintain his majority leader status, and the open-seat contest in Montana is one of the GOPs top pick-up opportunities in November. Bullock, a Democrat, ultimately chose Lt. Gov. John Walsh, who was already running for Senate. Baucus announced his retirement from the Senate early last year.
He wanted to weigh in on who I should choose and this was before it was even public, Bullock said of Reid. And I said it was none of your damn business.
Bullock would not say whether Reid suggested a replacement for Baucus, telling reporters to reach out to the majority leaders camp for confirmation. A Reid spokesperson declined comment.
But Bullock did further outline his message to Reid in that December call.
I said, You know what. Stay out of my decision-making. This is a decision I make and no one else. This is one of those decisions that voters have entrusted me with, Bullock continued.

Real catfight or kabuki by a wannabe Manchin gov?
Reid had some allegiance to Bohlinger I presume? I would love to see a brutal primary between Walsh and Bohlinger who poll very close together in a primary matchup. That would lock up the nomination for Daines who starts with a cool 17 point lead.
Screw you Reid. We’re throwing you out on your ***
Long gone are the days when voters sent Representatives to office to pursue the interests of the citizens. Now, we send politicians to pursue party agenda which is power and wealth.
Actually Walsh is the weakest candidate. Before the appointment I figured it was a toss up but I think the GOP has a distinct advantage now..
I had wondered. Would Bohlinger perform better?
I think so..put it back to a toss up, but I think Walsh will win the primary as a sitting Senator but lose in the general.
Schweitzer not running really screwed up the Dims plans up here and they don't seem to be helping themselves..
More smokescreen
Pete Wilson made the mistake of appointing some nobody to replace him in the Senate when he became Calif. Governor. That nobody proceeded to lose 2 years later to either Boxer or Feinstein(year of the woman). Condi Rice was a hot, young, 36-year-old at the time. The seat(s) are gone and the rest is history.
NRSC and DSCC I think is what you mean.
I know the Rehberg disaster (AKA - HindenRehberg) caused well-justified skepticism about this seat, but with Daines having such a commanding lead and excellent fundraising numbers on top of the fact that most national Democrats aren’t even considering it a top priority, we can pull out a victory here.
There is no excuse for a Rat to win a Red state Senate seat in an off year election. We’ve blown 5 in the last 2 cycles and let’s not forget the Libertarian candidate who swung a few voters to let the Dems win.
Isn’t there a former Illinois governor sitting in jail for something like selling a senate seat.
“Isnt there a former Illinois governor sitting in jail for something like selling a senate seat.”
Yeah, and Reid poked his nose in there too. And the governor appointed somebody Reid didn’t want and he refused to seat him for a while...and he was black!
Yep, for the next thirteen and a half years there sure is!
No, especially not an open seat with a pretty laughable Dem candidate. Both Bohlinger and Walsh seem like clowns (Does bow-tie Bohlinger he think he’s ‘Bill Nye the anus guy’?)
Besides, Daines is a much more capable challenger than Rehberg was, and has hopefully learned from the mistakes.
The only winnable races ripe for an upset due to moderate squishes are South Dakota and West Virginia, but the war on coal has doomed Dems in WV and they are running a Happy Meal candidate in SD, so I’m not worried about those.
The real fight is going to be in the red states. Knocking off Landrieu, Hagan, and Begich, with fingers crossed for wave victories in Michigan and Colorado. New Hampshire is an afterthought if Brown runs. Not rating Oregon or Virginia as of now. Iowa is a wild card.
This all depends on us holding Kentucky of course, which may be impossible with Mitch McConnell. He needs to be taken down. I’m not losing sleep over Georgia. Local Dems are bankrupt and minorities skip the midterms, unless Michelle Nunn goes blackface and fools them.
Actually Reid had endorsed Walsh, which is what lead to the appearance of Bullock following Reid's lead in this appointment. It obviously gives Walsh an advantage that he didn't have before in the election. Still, at this point it's Daines race to lose.
Bohlinger said he would consider dropping out of the primary if Walsh was appointed.
Another Manchin wannabe. How the hell did a Rat get elected governor in Montana in the first place?
Wow left wing roll call is pushing planted stories from the DNC and Reid’s office.
What load of astroturf crap.
