Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.) said on Tuesday that an increase in the 18.4 cents per gallon federal gas tax "resonates" with a lot of members of the House Transportation Committee.
Petri said while speaking at a "Safe Routes To Everywhere" event at the Capitol on Tuesday morning that lawmakers have heard from truck drivers who are volunteering to pay higher taxes on diesel gasoline to help improve the condition of the roads they drive on.
"When we had our initial hearing, the Trucking Association came down and said 'they're not in the business of raising cost for their members or making life more difficult for their members, but they supported raising the diesel fuel tax on the truckers because they wanted to have a first rate, efficient transportation system," said Petri, who is a member of the GOP's leadership team on the Transportation Committee.
"It would cost them if they didn't," Petri continued. "They looked at all the different alternatives as the way to fund the system, and they thought the fairest way would be to do that. That resonates with people."

All modern diesels sold in the US require ULSD already.
Using anything less will wreck them in short order. Even Low Sulfur Diesel will destroy them.
Nice play on the Diesel Gasoline!
Republicans run for office on an anti-tax, small government platform and then forget about it about as fast as Obama forgot about his oath of office.
They already spent $800 billion on “Shovel ready” jobs to fix the nation’s infrastructure back in 2009.
Unfortunately, the only shovel-ready job that got created was Jay Carney’s.
You’re correct.
That’s why diesel went up in price relative to gasoline in 2007 when the 15ppm limit went into effect.
And why gasoline will go up in price in 2017.
Probably the ones that can’t speak English.......
Wonder where they found truckers dumb enough to ask for more fuel taxes, and dumb enough to believe the money will be used for roads?
We always have a party that is ready to use half of America that site in the cart, waiting to be transported by the shrinking half out pulling, by voting to support those in the cart!
Send these RINO clowns home!

Why is there an endless need to ‘fund the system’?
When even Republicans are talking ‘what is fair’, you know you have lost the whole war.
The federal gasoline tax was implented in June 1932 @ 1 cent/gal.
It was last raised in 1993 to 18.4 cents/gal.
First, the tax increase seems huge. Does it have to be that high? Second, how about combining the tax increase (hopefully smaller), with a mandate to grant the permits for the Keystone pipeline?
With a more business-friendly President, we would have better options; e.g., cutting the Amtrak subsidy, opening off-shore drilling, relaxing the fuel-efficiency standards, and ending subsides to ethanol. We could both provide the funds needed to maintain our highway system, rev up the economy, and balance the budget without raising taxes.
that was clever
Like to blast a steel toe up there first.
Thank you. Feel free to use it and pass it on. I’d love to see it go viral and become a umm. . . meme, even if I never get the credit for it.
Great post right out of the box!
I hate these establishment a55hol3z! I can hardly afford gas as it is, we need to REDUCE the gas taxes we have so that ordinary Americans can afford to live, not increase it.
Or more likely, mass transit is some urban area.
Ding-Ding-Ding. We have a winner. You are exactly right. To the “RESONATED”: You are all smoking Crack if you think this money will go to roads and bridges.

What the hell happened to the near 1 trillion dollars we spent in so called shovel ready infrastructure jobs in the 2009 Stimulus Bill??? Where did all that money go and why aren’t GOPe’s in DC screaming to find out? How come after blowing a trillion in the people’s money we don’t see any improvement?
I’m sure a 2 X 4 up beside his head would resonate with the rest of America.
