TAMPA — An atmosphere of family fun at the Florida State Fair was trampled Friday night by a crowd of young people carrying out an annual practice known as wilding, sheriff’s investigators said.
By the end of the night, the fair closed early and one teenager among the 99 people ejected for disorderly conduct was killed — hit by a sport utility vehicle as he tried to cross Interstate 4.
Twelve people were arrested on charges including trespassing and fighting.
Now, authorities are considering possible changes in fair policy, including limiting the hours when young people are admitted free to the fair on its first Friday, “Student Day.”
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, which provides fair security, planned for the annual stampede but deputies quickly became overwhelmed as a small group of running teens swelled to hundreds of people running and pushing everyone and everything in their path, Sheriff’s Col. Jim Previtera said.
The department based its planning on last year’s lower levels of violence. Similar outbreaks have been made headlines before nationwide, including an August 2011 incident on opening day of the Wisconsin State Fair.

Sorry, if people break the law, they should be punished, but no way death is the appropriate punishment, nor will I consider it happy when a life is extinguished without good cause.

Or collect their drivers’ license plus a $50 deposit as a condition of entry. Give it back on the way out from a shack at a parking lot exit.
Speaking of which, wouldn’t it be fun to dedicate one day as “Martin Luther King Black History Appreciation Day”, and set the entry fee at ten times the usual fee. Give away a MLK bobble head doll or something to justify the increase. That would make some liberal heads pop.
Previtera said the youths who take part in the stampede are predominantly African-American, and the sheriff’s office has worked with its partners in the community — including the NAACP — to address the problem and reach out to youngsters beforehand with a message: This behavior is dangerous and unacceptable.So the sheriff's office says they have been working with the NAACP, and the NAACP President says she has no idea what the Sheriff is talking about -- which sounds like she either wasn't working it, or didn't think it was a problem.That was news to Carolyn Collins, Hillsborough County NAACP president, who said she had never heard of the practice before. But Collins said she would reach out to the sheriff’s office to work together on it.

And, per another article I read (on FR, and assuming that it was correct....), the kid was killed three hours after he was bounced from the fair. It wasn't like he was thrown out of the fair gate, and into oncoming traffic.

Someone obviously missed the memo to always refer these miscreants as "Teens."
The sheriff’s office has been hit by questions about why it didn’t call the parents of Andrew Joseph III to let them know he had been ejected so they could pick him up.The article mentions fights with HUNDREDS of people, deputies being attacked by hand trucks, deputies witnessing crimes but being unable to get close enough to do anything about them. And the black community seems most concerned that when a wilding kid gets thrown out, that the deputies have a responsibility to call the parents of the kids they are having to eject for committing crimes.
Maybe next year they could set up a large detainment area, and just take all the miscreants there and lock them up together, and require the parents to come pick them up.

Apparently they did just that, at one time. MLK Jr. wrote a tear-jerking article asking how he would explain to his little daughter why she couldn't go to the amusement park. Well, incidents like this are why she couldn't go. That's the cold, hard truth of it.
