Michael Sam, a University of Missouri defensive tackle and SEC defensive Player of the Year, will enter the NFL draft in May as an openly gay man.
Sam stated publicly what his teammates and coaches at Mizzou have known since August: "I am an openly, proud gay man."
Stop the presses! Mr. Sam is proud of something - his sexual preference - that everyone who isn't a gay activist takes for granted. What exactly is Mr. Sam "proud" of?
Sam is eligible for the NFL draft in May. Assuming that he is drafted, Sam could become the first openly gay player in the history of the NFL.
"I understand how big this is," he said. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL."
In 2014, "Gay Man to Enter Workforce" has the everyday-occurrence sound of a headline in The Onion. But when the NFL is involved, it's a first -- and potentially a landmark moment -- in the history of American sports.
The New York Times headlined their news article, "NFL Prospect Proudly Says What Teammates Knew: He's Gay." How exactly do you state "proudly" that you're gay? Is it in the tone of voice? A lift of the eyebrow? No -we are being instructed on how to react to Mr. Sam's announcement. This is how good, tolerant people should feel. Very well, thanks NY Times. I wouldn't have known how to react otherwise.

Flag football ( look no typo )
Tight ends
Mar-vel-ous !
If ANY talking head says it s not great on any TV network, he or she is DONE.
Should guarantee him a high draft pick. Don’t want to offend the homosexual crowd.
He’s a marginal 4th-6th round draft pick. He’s establishing a discrimination case even before there are any events to substantiate such a case.
I don’t have to shower with him. IF I DID, it would be an issue.
Potentially making plenty of money as a football player, he should be “gay.”
Sam's dream come true.
Hope for his sake he’s tough on that line. He’s undoubtedly made it tougher for himself.
Will the he-she have it’s own shower facilities?
So “proud” he “came out” only after the season (after asking his team to keep it hush-hush) and only before the draft because lots of news media was on the trail.
Wide receiver? Anyway, if being “happy, happy, happy” is supposedly the norm, how come there’s this big “celebration” when someone “comes out”? I guess they’re like the flintstones and just wanted to have a “gay old time”. (think theme song lyrics)
Thats special.
I personally wish the guy nothing but the best. If his team mates can handle it, so can I
. . . well, even IF he’s a tight end, he’ll be a Wide Receiver soon. . .
He’s proud to put another man’s penis in his mouth? Open wide with pride.
Will they require an AIDS test as part of the medical exam?
I agree. This is one big who cares. And I never understood the “as long as I don’t have to shower with him”.....
I’m straight. As an arrow. And I know that I can’t go around groping any woman I see. Why is it that when the roles are reversed everyone assumes gay men can’t keep their hands to themselves? I have friends that are gay. They are no more attracted to me than I am to their mother. It’s simply not an issue.
An NFL team is a slightly different animal. But I’ve been in plenty of locker rooms and the last thing a gay male would want to do is make a move on a teammate in that environment.
Much ado about nothing.
